Chapter One

At first glance, the egg appeared to be a mutated version of an ariessa egg, but Talon quickly realized that it was far from it. In fact, it appeared to be the egg of a kirin, only it looked...different...

Naturally, nothing found in a place like this would ever be normal, he supposed. This was the Ancient Oak, a tree that was said to be as old as the Keep itself. Ancient earth magi were said to come here when they died, releasing the last bit of spirit energy that they had left into the roots, trunk, and leaves of the tree. It was said that any special ceromony held here would recieve the blessing of the earth and forests.

Talon had been scouting for the perfect spot to bury his first companion, a female zand bear named Doskei, when he had come across the thing buried in a poorly hidden pile of mud and twigs. A nest, he realized.

The egg was the green of new leaves in the summer, and instead of scales, there were small white flowers that bloomed on the shell's surface; the elegant mane that flowed from within the shell was just a shade darker than the shell's leaf-green color.

Talon picked the egg up, somehow feeling that if the egg were truly real, it would feel like any other egg in his careful hands: magical in origin and special and unique. It was real, and Talon's sense of the arcane were sharpened when his hands closed on the egg. More than eighty feet away, he could see a farir drift from tree to tree, a telvian panther stalk its clueless prey. Talon watched in awed amazement as a group of naga women, some he knew and some he didn't, celebrate the full moon and the omens it brought with it.

Reluctantly, he put the unusual egg in the satchel at his side, pulled up the hood of his cypress green cloak, and continued on his way back to the Keep. Once he passed the ancients gates that served as the only entrance (and the only exit as well), Talon was sure to keep his head down.

He knew that if someone were to recognize him, they would probably ask him what he had found and peek inside of his bag, which appeared as if he had an egg or two inside of it. If they were curious enough they would eventually find out about his new discovery, and magi from all over would form in packs, pestering him about where he found this new egg.

When he reached his room, Talon locked the door and took the egg out of his satchel and placed it carefully on the softest and largest pillow he could find. He closed the drapes and lit a fire, using a tiny spell that he learned from one of his fire magi friends.

"Where did you come from?" Talon asked to no one in particular. Of course he was surprised when he got an answer.

From the forest...Forest Guardian

Talon jumped and leaped back, preparing to cast an offensive spell against the unseen force. When nothing came after him, he relaxed his muscles and rose from his crouch. He kept his eyes trained on the egg in front of him, in case it was to show some sign of life.

It didn't.

"What was that?" he asked aloud, half expecting the same voice to reply.

It didn't.

At that moment, someone knocked on the door. A girl opened the door without any invintation from Talon, who was hurriedly wrapping the egg in a thin but warm blanket and stuff it inside of his satchel. The girl was beautiful, easily the fairiest creature Talon had ever seen, but its not like he could tell her that, not really; the girl could be as tenacious as a nandi bear mother.

Her name was Shoney, Talon's best friend and the love of his life, though the girl didn't know it. She was tall and had delicate features. She had the appearance of most water magi, slightly elfish and just as beautiful as the element that responded to them so naturally. Her hair was a glossy black, and it fell down to her waist in a straight cascade of silk; her eyes was the same brilliant sapphire as the water surrounding the Callisto Islands at night. She wore a tight-fitted, floor-sweeping, ice-blue gown that left her entire back bare and reached up around her neck.

"You're back early," Talon said by way of greeting.

Shoney smiled, her perfect teeth nearly blinding him. "Well, there wasn't much to do in Synara, and none of the shops held anything of interest."

"I see you're still sticking to the Pact as well," he noted.

The Pact: the agreement between Talon, Shoney, and Ukko to only raise creatures that matched their affinities for an element.

"Did you think I would break it?" she lifted a perfectly sculpted brow.

Talon shrugged and grinned. "I guess not. Now are you gonna hug me or not?"

Shoney giggled and flung herself into her best friends waiting arms. She inhaled deeply, taking in the way he smelled of the forest after rain, a scent that was more enjoyable than it sounded. Shoney pressed herself tightly against Talon, wishing that she could just let him know everything.

The two were so caught up in the moment that they didn't notice a sudden, slightly misty wind drift from the darkest corner of the room and out the cracked door.

You write very well! Your setup appears to have been thought out, and already we can get a good glimpse at the characters' personalities. I hope you will continue writing :3

Chapter Two

Talon gave a huge yawn.

He didn't know that egg like that could exist, meaning that eggs like the one he'd found the previous day could keep him all night, literally talking to him. Gods, it was so tiring! He hadn't gotten any sleep, and by the time the egg seemed to take a hint, the sun was up, and it was time for his elemental classes. He had thought about skipping, but realized what kind of spells he could miss in one day and decided against it. So here he was now.

As tired as a magi trying to calm a tinsel wyrm hatchling.

Talon realized (too late) that he was steadily falling forward, and now, his head fell on his desk with a great big BANG! The entire class was startled by this and turned to look back at the magi who had disturbed Elder Fu's explanation of Scribe Tien's Theory of the Law of Three.

Elder Fu bristled. "Is there a reason that you are disrupting my class, Mr. Talon?"

Talon hesitated. It wasn't like he could tell the whole world that he had just found a one-of-a-kind egg that could seemed to be able to talk to him. No. He'd have to lie, and the just the very thought of it had him wincing in his seat. He hated lying, and it always came back to bite him in the rear.

Giving up, Talong murmured, "I'm bored sir."

Elder Fu chubbhy face turned a strange shade of violet. "Then maybe it's best that you get out of my class and head back to your bed chambers? If you're 'bored', I mean. While you're gone, I'll continue to teach the class about today's spell: Scribe Tien's Summoning Spell."

The Summoning Spell!? Dear gods, what have done to myself now, Talon inwardly groaned. That's what I get for lying to the teacher.

The egg hadn't moved from its place by the fire. Talon had secretly expected to stand up and starting dancing in wild erratic dance that only an egg could pull off. Yet it hadn't.

The earth magi sighed and let himself fall on his bed, made of the finest keep spider silk and cotton woven with sleeping spells, and closed his eyes. As it turns out, the god of sleep would not take him, because that wretched egg was talking. Again.

Save the forest...Guardian...Master

"Shut up!" Talon screeched.

The egg was silent.

As Talon gave it such a look of hate that he half hoped that it would combust into flames (sadly, only fire magi had that power), he noticed that something was, well, off about the egg. When he finally figured it out, he quickly tried to recall every bit of knowledge the he knew about this particular area of being a magi. Talon hurriedly put the egg inside of his satchel, grabbed a bunch of his softest blankets, many of which came from his bed, and ran out the door.

The earth magi ignored the those calling to him, knowing that he'd have consequences for it, but he knew that they wouldn't be too bad. The worst part of this was because he could avoid them, had he taken the time to walk. It wasn't an uncommon sight to see a magi or two running through the crowds, worried/panicked/excited looks on their faces.

That tends to happen when an egg hatches.

Talon ran back to the Ancient Oak, deciding that it was as good a place as any to let the egg hatch. He had to take his time now, to make sure every single condition was just right for the hatchling inside. Talon spread out the blankets, a smile plastered to his face the whole while. He set the strange egg on the pile of blankets, keeping one or two beside him and did the only thing he could do now.

He waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Talon waited so long that he began to count blades of grass out of bored. He knew he'd forget something, something that that every other magi and Elder and Scribe could agree on: Bring something to entertain yourself while you wait.

After waiting for felt like five centuries, a sharp crack in the egg's shell caught Talon's attention. He sat on his knees, leaning over the egg, ready to help the hatchling if it got stuck. Apparently, the hatchling didn't want or need his help because the hatchling inside bucked, bringing the egg on its side and crack into three large pieces.

The first word that came to Talon's mind was whoa.

The hatchling inside was a kirin, but a completely new species as well. As the the slightly clumsy kirin hatchling stumbles into a standing position, it met Talon's gaze. The hatchling was even more beautiful than Shoney, words that could get him mutilated if she ever heard him speak them aloud. It's fur was the same color as the shell, the green of new leaves, and its mane and incredibly long tail were just a shade darker than its fur. Instead of hard scales, the kirin had soft white flowers on its back, and the beginnings of an incredibly sharp antler on its forehead. It's eyes were so dark that Talon couldn't tell where the pupils and the irises ended or began.

"Hey there, little one," Talon said, smiling gently, all of his previous qualms with the creature now forgotten.

The kirin gave a small chirping noise.

Talon reached for the kirin, only to grasp nothing but air. The earth magi stood up and looked around for the little kirin, seeing nothing. His gaze was traveling over the Ancient Oak when the hatchling walked out of the tree.

"You're a funny one, aren't you?" Talon cooed. "Come here, little one. I will not hurt you."

The kirin hatchling cocked its head to the side.

Suddenly, Talon got an idea. He reached into the pocket of his cloak and produced an apple.

The kirn's eyes widened. Talon held the apple out, smiling welcomingly. He clicked his tongue, the way he did whenever he was calling an earth creature towards him. The hatchling took a tentative step towards him and sniffed the apple and his hand.

The apple was gone in two large bites.

The earth magi laughed and knelt beside the now sleeping hatchling, wondering how he was going to sneak it back into the Keep. Talon absently ran his hands through the kirin's mane, loving the way it felt like silk against his skin.

From far away, Ukko watched the entire scene unfold.

Chapter Three

So Talon had gotten an egg as well.

Ukko had watched the entire scene unfold. He'd watched the oddly constructed kirin hatchling accept the apple and fall asleep, had watched Talon pet it with the gentleness of a mother.

The wind magi briefly wondered what was happening, remembered how he'd first gotten his egg. He'd found it in a basket that was woven from some leafy material, nestled snugly and warmed by a fire that he hadn't lit in his bed chambers. Resting lightly against the egg was a card.

Ukko picked it up. The words were written in a woman's elegant script, and what he read chilled him all the way down to his magic-influenced bones:

Save the air...Wind Guardian

At first, the words written on the card had confused him deeply. How was one supposed to save something that wasn't exactly tangible? How was a magi supposed to save the wind of all thing?

Was he chosen because he could command the wind on a whim?

No, that was ridiculous. There were other wind magi present at the Keep. There was nothing special about him, nothing special about his powers and abilities. He was just a regular magi. Well, one that had an ab-normal crush, but regular just the same.

Ukko threw the card into the fire and peered at the egg itself.

It wasn't like anything he'd ever seen before. In truth, it was just about as special as he was, yet there was something about it. He suddenly, wished he hadn't thrown the card into the fire because there might have been some form of signature on it. One just doesn't go and take random gifts, especially ones like eggs. There could be some form of a demon inside, savage by nature and a ruthless killer at heart. The hatchling could be a demonic hellhound or something.

The egg appeared to be nothing more than a pearl, shapped like most eggs. Its shell was a glistening black and silver color, one shade seeming to melt into the next. As the fire light glinted off its shell, Ukko could just barely make out a serpentine shape inside.

Ukko sighed at the memory, remebering how the egg had burst into fragments in the middle of the night. The hatching itself wasn't very quiet, and at least seven other magi were brave enough to go see what the commotion was about. It was difficult hiding the hatchling in his closet. And it wasn't being quiet either. He had to put a sleeping spell on it.

The air magi looked up at the sky, watching as a celestial dragon soared overhead with two of its hatchlings. When he was no longer able to distinguish them from the clouds, he let his gaze travel back to his friend, studying his reaction to, well, everything.

The air magi took in Talon's slightly tanned skin, the way his shoulders seemed broader and more worked out than his. The earth magi was obviously a tall person, even from where Ukko stood on his hill. Talon's dark honey colored hair was plastered to his forehead and neck from sitting out in the sun for so long. His impssibly black eyes were off somewhere else, probably thinking about ways to seduce Shoney. He had a handsome face, Ukko realized, more so than most at least. Talon had a perfectly straight nose, a bow shaped mouth, and the slightly elfish features thast suggested that someone in his ancestry was a water magi.

Ukko frowned at the thought and pushed it out of his mind. Whatever.

A fairly quiet squalk told him that his newest and oddest hatchling had arrived. Ukko looked up at the obsidian colored quetzalcoatl as it circled just over his head, soft feathers brushing against Ukko's skin as it wrapped itself around its master's torso.

Ukko smiled as the creature settled its pure white gaze on him. "You've grown some," he noticed.

Indeed, his hatchling had grown quite a bit since he'd last seen it. It was now nearly as long as he was, from head to toe.

Ukko tore his eyes away from his newest creature to look at his best friend...and meet his amazing eyes. The two stared at each other for a while, neither moving. Ukko noticed with a vague sense of irritation that the kirin hatchling was awake now, watching his obsidian hatchling.

And then Talon smiled.

Ukko just shook his head and stood, the easily supporting the quetzalcoatl's weight. He turned to leave, and just before he stepped into the shadows that would envelop the both of them, he looked over his shoulder, the one that the quetzalcoatl's head didn't occupy, and saw his friend's look of obvious hurt. His eyes pleaded for Ukko to come back.

But the air magi couldn't. Not just yet. He needed answeres, and he wasn't going to wait for something bad to happen. Ukko was going to solve this mystery, before it was too late.

Little did he know that it already was.

Chapter Four

Ukko saw everything, had known everything in the very beginning.

There was no mistaking him, even from where Talon sat now. He would always recognize Ukko's olive toned body, his warm brown eyes, his dark hair and the way it fell in waves over his brows. And then there was the black quetzalcoatl, something that Talon hadn't been expecting.

Who would?

The obsidian quetzalcoatl had radiant feathers that ranged from black to several different hues of silver. It's underbelly was a downy gray-white, and its eyes were the color of virgin snow. It had a gracefully long body, and even though it was a hatchling (somehow, Talon knew what its current stage was) it seemed to have the appearance of a hatchling that has been breathing for more than five years.

The pressure on his lap decreased, and Talon looked down to see that his kirin had woken from its almost nonexistent nap. Its eyes were carefully trained on the quetzalcoatl, which seemed to be glaring back at it. The kirin's tail whipped against his back, which hurt. A lot.

Talon gave his friend a hopeful smile. He desperately hoped that he would understand why he hadn't told him about the egg, about everything so far. Talon hoped that his friend would come over and talk with him, to try and understand.

As if Ukko could hear his thoughts, the wind magi just shook his head and took the step forward that would leave nothing but a memory of him.

A pained expression came of Talon's face, and he stifled the urge shriek a string of spells that would cause the very core of the earth to shake and protest. He looked down at the ground, gripping a handful of grass in both of his hands. The kirin met his angry/horrified gaze and made that strange chirping noise again. There was nothing normal about this one, was there?

"Come on," Talon said. "I'm taking you back to the Keep with me."

"What's all the commotion about?" Shoney asked the nearest person she could find.

The Keep was in literal chaos. Magi everywhere were making arrangements go out to the stream and scour every nook and cranny they could find. For what, she didn't know. Was there a new creature there? She herself thought about making a quick trip there but decided against it, at least for now. She needed to know what was going on here.

The magi that Shoney had questioned, an old woman, turned and replied, "There's two new creatures out and about."

Shoney tensed. "What?"

"Yeah" the old woman said, turning her head to cough raggedly into her fist. "Apprentice Talon and Apprentice Ukko have discovered two creatures. A kirin and a black quetzalcoatl. Can you believe it!?"

"No, I can honestly say I most certainly can't," Shoney whispered.

Shoney was prepared to go after the oth of them when a bit of logic overcame her. Her two best friends in the world both 'discover' creatures that are in totally agreement with the Pact, and she gets nothing? Where's the justice?

The water magi forced her way through the crowed of nosy magi and stopped at the scence before her. It was true. It was all true. A kirin hatchling, one that looked something like an ariessa with long legs and tail stood close to Talon, narrowly avoiding other magi's atempts at touching it. Talon tunred his Glare of Death on them, and they instantly backed off, hands up, a posture that would look submitive if it wasn't the perfect spell casting pose.

And then there was Ukko, who was standing in the shade of a tree, looking every bit as calm as he usual did. He had his usual bored expression on his face, and Shoney noticed that he was probably ready to send his own crowd of jealous magi into a bottomless pit. Even as she watched, a girl, one that everybody had nicknamed YellowFang, reached a hand out towards the obsidian quetzalcoatl. Ukko did nothing to stop her, probably because he had a major crush on her.

Or maybe it was because the girl was a sight for sore eyes.

Whatever the reason, Ukko allowed her to stand closer to him than any of the other magi.

"Shoney!" Talon's voice managed to reach her ears, even though the wild chaos.

The water magi turned her sapphire gaze on Talon, giving him the best look of cold fury that she could manage. There was one thing the girl knew best, and it was being a hellhound, even when it wasn't technically her elemental range. It was probably better to say she could give a mermaid a run for her money in the stuck-up department.

"What?" she snapped.

Talon flinched. "Not you, too. Please. Not you, too."

She didn't bother to find out what he meant by that. She turned, and in a whirl of white silk, Shoney turned and went back to her bed chambers. And sitting there, wrapped snugly in a makeshift nest of Shoney's namista and keep spider silk sheets, was an egg.

Jackpot.
