Well, I have OCD, and I'm very nitpicky. I said semi-formal, anyways, and it's definitely more formal than a chat thread or even some other forums I've been on. Especially here in the Hall of Speakers, where you want to state your opinions in a dignified manner. I find it harder to take someone seriously if they're using incorrect grammar, in my opinion. Perhaps not 100% correct grammar, but at least 90%. And people should at least make a conscious effort to use grammar.FauxMonstur wrote:it doesn't feel very formal to me, mostly just thoughtful. like, people take the time to consider what they're saying before posting. this is something i've thought about a lot though, and i still don't think that 100% proper grammar is in any way necessary to navigate a forum. it makes it a lot easier, yeah, especially for people with disabilities like dyslexia (and in turn makes it more considerate to type with good grammar), but i still don't think militant grammar policing is necessary. 8VCrazyflight wrote:Often, I find myself making generalizations about people that don't bother to make an effort to type correctly. It tells me that they're lazy and somewhat inconsiderate. This forum is way different from chat threads. To me, it's semi-formal, and public, so using good grammar is almost necessary to get around. I also find it easier to understand what someone is typing when they do use correct grammar.FauxMonstur wrote:i think people are entitled to type the way they want to, as long as it's easily understandable. p:
after reading through a billion threads on the topic about how people assume someone who doesn't use the shift key or put punctuation into every sentence must be a dunce, it just. started to annoy me. i don't capitalize anything and sometimes i miss an apostrophe because i type quickly and i talk in group chats where everything moves very fast and no one cares how well you spell. i grew accustomed to that, and it's how i choose to type in other places as well. as you can see, i'm not stupid for doing so. :V
getting up in arms over something so small is REALLY petty holy dang. i've seen people work themselves into a spitting rage over them darned kids who don't use the shift key (i'm 20 by the way lmfao and i got a B+ in my college comp class).
long story short: don't judge people based on the ways that they choose to type. maybe they're more comfortable typing a certain way. maybe they're just lazy. maybe they are, in fact, stupid. it doesn't really matter what you think, unless their typing style actively hinders your ability to understand them.
thems my two cents.
that doesn't really happen here from what i can see, it's just something that's always kind of bothered me. nitpicking and the like bother me in general because it's petty.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
For the most part, I just want to be able to read (and understand) what people are saying. I know that I don't have amazing grammar, but people need to read what they post before they actually post it. It's not that difficult. My expectations are pretty low (being a teenager myself, I am way too used to people not bothering to type out a word or spell it correctly), but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Generally, I tend to type in the same way that I speak in real life, which is usually with quite a few slang words, but only because that's what I'm used to hearing and reading.

If I'm roleplaying with a person, I want them to at least attempt good grammar/spelling/punctuation, etc. Most of the time, if someone's misspelling things all over the place, it makes me feel like they're not trying. If they want people to understand them, or want to be taken seriously, it just makes everything easier if they actually try. If they don't care, it's their choice to do so.
Bad grammar bothers me, but I'm not going to freak out about it.

I really hate it when people are too lazy to use proper spelling and grammar. Slang doesn't really bother me, since I know that that's how people really speak. However, spell it out. It's not that hard, and it's good practice for later in life.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
For me, as many of you may know, good grammar is essential. Not only does it makes ideas easier to convey, but also provides a very uniform way to write. I find myself puzzling over people's 'shortcuts', like 'u' and 'r'. I stumble over words, often skipping key phrases. I always, always try to type with good grammar, it's just the way I was brought up. I an completely bilingual, and when my mother drills me in writing and reading exersises in both languages, she teaches me to always write with proper gramar. I do not think I have ever written in 'text chat'. I do occasionally make errors, but I only just turned thirteen and am still learning. I do understand that some people may not like typing with proper grammar, but in my oppinion, it is an element of writing that may not be overlooked.

Personally I can't stand bad grammar; I'm definitely what you'd call a Grammar Nazi.
I can understand if the person I'm conversing with is young or simply doesn't know how to spell a word or two, I can handle that for sure. Though, if the person just blatantly ignores their grammar or speaks in Text Talk I honestly loose my mind.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
I honestly don't feel like reading back through other peoples' opinions, but I a more than willing to give my opinion on the subject. It irritates me to no end. While people are (obviously) entitled to type however they would like, they should hold some amount of consideration for the ones who are having to read. If I'm trying to read a reply from someone who has apparently forgotten what punctuation is, it literally gives me a headache. I can't focus on what they're trying to say at all and I usually have to read it multiple times before I can do anything with it.
I'm not talking about small mistakes, either. When someone accidentally uses the wrong grammar it can make sentences rather amusing. I laugh at that. It is when it becomes obvious that someone is not even trying to make sense that it starts getting annoying.

I admit I am a little of a grammar freak too. Yes, I realize everyone makes mistakes, but if your grammer is so bad you can't get your point across, you need to fix something. Since this is socially acceptable, I do sometimes say things such as "LOL" or "ROFL", but I generally perfer to stay away from things like that{not including emotes.}
Something else that bothers me is when people leave out letters in a word so they can "save time". My opinion on this is "Congratulations, you just saved .3 seconds!" This might not really fit into this topic, but it is grammar related and it bothers me a good bit.
It is really irritating too when people such as teachers make mistakes constantly.Yes, they are people too, but when your job is to make worksheets and things to possibly teach us about grammar, I think you should proofread your work first, which is why I think people make so many grammar mistakes, especially on the computer. They just leave it to spell check without making sure their paper or whatever sounds correct.
