Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
Bad grammar is bothersome, to different degrees. Minor problems with spelling and usage are annoying (effect/affect, commas) bother me, but do not detract from the meaning. Larger spelling problems (leetspeak and extreme typos) can make it so that something is nearly unreadable, or requires immense effort to read. Terrible grammar combined with spelling errors can make something so difficult to interpret, that one simply gives up and tableflips.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
Generally if it's something small like a misspell then I don't really mind. As long as I can read through it and not have to stop and think for a second about what the person is trying to say, than it doesn't really bother me.
I personally try to have good grammar and spelling, even though I'm kinda terrible at both. I always proofread something I'm about to post

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
I'm not too picky on grammar just as long as it's understandable enough that you don't have to think to hard to understand and also not text talk and I don't care too much on spelling just as long as most words are spelled right.
the only text talk I really use is just lol or other words for laugh, since i dunno it just feels more right than *Laughs*
I know for fact my grammar and spelling is bad that's why i normally don't mind. the funny thing is I spell better in Japanese than I do in English even though English is my first Language. My Japanese grammar still needs some work though.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
I admit, I'll use 'lol' a lot, but that's pretty much it. I highly dislike bad grammar, especially run-on sentences, missing capitalization, and missing commas and punctuation. I find it annoying, as it's hard to read and makes the post look sloppy. I often ignore a post like that, as I hate trying to read it as it makes me wince.
Like in this one RP I'm in. The person didn't use capitalization, there was missed punctuation, run-on sentences, it was just horrible. The really bad thing was that they had great potential, but they never used it. We finally just kicked them out.
I have a tendency to misspell words sometimes, but only because I type fast, and it doesn't happen often. I'll often go back to edit my work before posting, but if I catch a mistake right after it's posted, I will go back and edit. So I don't get annoyed by small spelling mistakes, but people who misspell frequently/easy words get on my nerves.
All in all, I'm not a complete Grammar Nazi, but I'm not a person who can say "Whatever," to bad grammar.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
Obviously if it's a typo (which I make tons of for some reason!) I don't mind it so much. After all, even the best of us can slip up occasionally.
However, I stand where most of the others in the thread do. If one is to lazy to at least try to speak properly I'm not going to put forward any effort to genuinely respond!
Obviously those who aren't native English/whatever language being used speakers are an exception. I do like to know, though, so I don't bluh at someone thinking they're incompetent when they just don't know the language well!

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
My OCD makes me a complete nitpicker when it comes to grammar. It just overwhelmingly disturbs me when some uses incorrect grammar. I mean, if it's something small like misspelling "mispell," for example, I wouldn't judge anyone. But if they completely talk like they're texting on a public forum ("lol tht was lyk sooooooo funny hahaha lol i wuz lyk DYINGGGGG lmao loljk but lyk..." you get the picture). I also have this bad thing where I absolutely hate the use of more than one or two exclamation marks. It's really weird; it just makes me want to scream.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
It bothers me, as I'm dyslexic. I've petty much taught myself how to spell and such because school was useless to me. If someone has an honest problem with the english language, fair enough. That could include a learning disability or not having english as your first language. But if you don't have those excuses then I don't understand how someone can get away with it! Especially when most browsers come with a built in spell check (and even then it's just an app away if it doesn't).
If what you're writing has a tonne of squiggly red lines under it then you just don't send! There's no excuse other than pure laziness and stupidity, in my opinion.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
i think people are entitled to type the way they want to, as long as it's easily understandable. p:
after reading through a billion threads on the topic about how people assume someone who doesn't use the shift key or put punctuation into every sentence must be a dunce, it just. started to annoy me. i don't capitalize anything and sometimes i miss an apostrophe because i type quickly and i talk in group chats where everything moves very fast and no one cares how well you spell. i grew accustomed to that, and it's how i choose to type in other places as well. as you can see, i'm not stupid for doing so. :V
getting up in arms over something so small is REALLY petty holy dang. i've seen people work themselves into a spitting rage over them darned kids who don't use the shift key (i'm 20 by the way lmfao and i got a B+ in my college comp class).
long story short: don't judge people based on the ways that they choose to type. maybe they're more comfortable typing a certain way. maybe they're just lazy. maybe they are, in fact, stupid. it doesn't really matter what you think, unless their typing style actively hinders your ability to understand them. (type the way you're comfortable, and let others type the way they're comfortable. BE NICE TO EACH OTHER, we are all friends.)
thems my two cents.

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
Often, I find myself making generalizations about people that don't bother to make an effort to type correctly. It tells me that they're lazy and somewhat inconsiderate. This forum is way different from chat threads. To me, it's semi-formal, and public, so using good grammar is almost necessary to get around. I also find it easier to understand what someone is typing when they do use correct grammar.FauxMonstur wrote:i think people are entitled to type the way they want to, as long as it's easily understandable. p:

Re: Bad Grammar - Bothersome?
it doesn't feel very formal to me, mostly just thoughtful. like, people take the time to consider what they're saying before posting. this is something i've thought about a lot though, and i still don't think that 100% proper grammar is in any way necessary to navigate a forum. it makes it a lot easier, yeah, especially for people with disabilities like dyslexia (and in turn makes it more considerate to type with good grammar), but i still don't think militant grammar policing is necessary. 8VCrazyflight wrote:Often, I find myself making generalizations about people that don't bother to make an effort to type correctly. that doesn't really happen here from what i can see, it's just something that's always kind of bothered me. nitpicking and the like bother me in general because it's petty.
