No, we don't have a thread like this one :D If you want to talk about how music influences you, you need to use 42-hall-of-speakers/100659-does-music-i ... o ple.html.

Some considerations/guidelines:

1. Feel free to post lyrics and video links but keep the embedding of YouTube and other videos behind a cut out of deference to those of us with slow, old 'net access. Do not, however, JUST post these things. Tell us why you listen to it, why you like it, how you found it, what it means to you!

2. All MS rules apply. If you wouldn't show it to your grandmother or couldn't overhear it in a public place like the mall, it probably doesn't belong here either.

Other dialog considerations:

- why you like the genres/music/artists you do
- why you DO NOT like some genres/music/artists
- how you discovered a particular genre/artist/music
- recommendations (music you think everyone should hear or be familiar with)

I'm an avid music listener. I'll listen to and enjoy just about anything with a few exceptions. That means I'm always on the prowl for new kinds of music, new bands, or new-to-me things I haven't heard before. At present I have over 20K songs in my music library, including ripped CDs. It doesn't include the things I have not yet been able to put into digital format like the old 78s and the cassettes. Probably another 10K songs in those media. My collection spans the genres from early country/gospel and classical music to indie, techno, and trance. About the only type of music I really can't stand is modern rap (and there are exceptions to that if the song tells a compelling story and doesn't use the f-bomb too often to tell it).

My favorite radio station is one out of Jones College in Jacksonville. It's been on the air since 1964. I suppose you'd call it generally an easy listening channel except most of the pieces they play are symphonic or instrumental arrangements and I HAVE heard some modern stuff done in that style. Most of it is of the bygone era/big band type or movie soundtracks from pre 1950s and musicals. If you're old enough to know about Lawrence Welk or at least know what the show looked like, you have a pretty good idea what the station plays.

Until I met Pshaw, I was pretty much confined to 80s era bands and old country and western stars. Now I like listening to indie, trance, techno, and Americana artists. Some of my favorites there include Wilco, Winterpills, The Faint, The Decemberists, Ladytron, and about a dozen others.

Another means of finding things I'd like to try is via the Amazon.com free samplers. I have collections of music from all over the world including modern Brazilian pop artists, classical Israeli folk songs, and Lebanese hard metal. I've been a fan of what used to be called J-pop (the soundtracks of anime) since before anime was readily available in the US. A friend who was a sailor and whose most recent port of call had been Japan introduced me to it in its original format and translated. I'm partial to the traditional Japanese drums too as well as the delicate little tea ceremony songs.

Last.fm was a good experience for me until they started adding commercials and shutting the music off ever 20 minutes unless you paid for the subscription (which doesn't offer anything else; you used to be able to make your own playlists and even to download stuff you liked for a minimal fee). It's how I found The Faint and similar bands and it introduced me to Americana and Gothic Country genres. I haven't tried Pandora recently but may go back to it to see how it works now. There's a new service out there whose name I forget which my husband discovered that works the way Last used to. I might try that out.

I rarely buy CDs any more. If I want something, I go to Amazon and buy the track I want, if not the whole album. When possible, I try t buy directly from the artist in order to ensure they actually get their royalties. It's a peeve of mine; I've known a few folk in the music industry and seen how they get cheated out of their livelihood by the very things which are supposed to protect them.

I don't illegally download anything. To me, that's just as bad as what the official companies are doing. Besides, I'm too dang blasted old to figure out how the interfaces work! When Napster was the thing, it was almost too complicated for me. Programs like Frostwire and Limewire are well beyond this old 'yote's ability to make functional.

I also don't download from iTunes. I prefer Amazon. I did a price/comparison check and it's less expensive to go with Amazon. They also tend to have more of the stuff I listen to while iTunes tends to feature television shows (which I cannot download because of the wireless speed) and top 40 stuff which I can't stand. I also like that Amazon's MP3s are compatible with any device; I cannot play my iTunes stuff on anything but an Apple device.

Musical devices: I have a phone capable of storing MP3s on it and I enjoyed listening, though the effect is somewhat tinny without an interface to put it into the car stereo. I have first generation iPod Nano which is still running and will still update. I use that one for car trips and we have a transponder which either overrides the station you put it on or plays to one not being used, depending upon where you're traveling. I am the proud owner of a first generation stereo (as in, this was one of the first devices WITH stereo). It also has a record player. Although tube driven, it has one of the best sounds of anything in the house. It even beats out the Boze speakers for Pshaw's iPod. The stereo in the bedroom is a 1970s model and it too puts out phenomenal sound. I love these old vintage devices; they were built for beauty and lasting as well as sound.

I mostly listen to Kamelot, Epica, and Rammstein. I find that they're really the only two bands I can stand listening to over and over again, since I seem to be the only person I know who listens to music to "watch" what the images they create in my head and not for "the beat". I pay equal attention to the words and the music behind it, and I often try to decipher lyrics. I stopped listening to Evanescence because most of her songs send me into horrible, horrible depressions.

Of course, Kamelot, Epica and Rammstein the only two bands I listen too. I also listen to Dark Moor, Nightwish, Within Temptation, I kind of listen to Lacuna Coil (I haven't really explored this band), Rhapsody of Fire, and Lady Gaga on a regular basis. At least, those are the ones I listen too the most. xD; I find it difficult to explore new music through Pandora and youtube since I seem to have a very strict taste in music. Or course, I use music to help me get through silence (I am one of those people who can't stand silence), and I use most of it to "flesh" out and apply drama and emotions to daydreams in my head.

I like Rammstein because I think German sounds sexy. I don't understand any of the lyrics, and I am perfectly happy with that. I like trying to guess at what they mean, and I have a feeling I like my interpretations and little "music videos" I made up better than the real thing. Kamelot is my favorite band because I love the lyrics to most of their songs, and I love the way they sound. <3 My favorite songs are Ghost Opera and The Great Pandemonium. I love how dramatic Ghost Opera is, and The Great Pandemonium, the way I interpret it, sends some very profound messages to all my little story characters. >:3

On the radio, I can pinpoint two definite things that I dislike intensely and will try to change as soon as I recognize the song. I call them "cheap blonds", and this covers basically Tyler Swift and Britney Spears (but to a lesser extent). I hate Tyler Swift's music so much. xD I also dislike rap as I find most of it to be vulgar. There are two other types of music I dislike, but they're harder for me to define (especially since I don't know the names of the artists nor the genre of music they sing), and attempting to try would attempt in a post longer than what it reasonable.

I like finding new music to enjoy, but most of the time, Pandora plays music I've listened too before or I am not paying enough attention to care (I listen to it while I am drawing or doing homework, and I can't concentrate on two things at once, lol). I have enough forethought to "thumbs down" music I dislike though; hard to work to something that's making horrible noises in your ear. Also, I seem to have difficult time "budgeting" time, so I don't have the opportunity to frolic through youtube.

I just have an mp3 player that's basically good for storage (for stuff like pictures) and playing music, but you can tell it's cheap since it can't do more than one thing at a time, but it's good enough for what it does. I miss my Zune though; it had games. ;~; On it I have all of the bands listed above (except Rhapsody of Fire and Dark Moor, unfortunately), amongst many artists that I only obtained one or two songs from. xD

So if people have music they like, PM me and share? It's getting boring listening to the same songs over and over again. xD
I have a lot of butterflies. :derp:

I have pretty narrow taste in music-I like techno, pop, electronica, some rock...pretty much anything that can get stuck in your head easily. I tend not to like bands as a whole, but I like individual songs. I also need variety-I cannot listen to more than a few songs by the same band in a row, or I will get bored and they will all start to sound the same.

I tend to value interesting music over lyrics-good lyrics help a song, but they don't make it for me. However, a song with boring music and really cliche lyrics will turn me off of the song every time. I'm sick of songs about love.

Probably related to this, I tend to really dislike rap, because the beats in the background tend to be boring and repetitive. Techno can be repetitive too, but it at least has some variety as the song goes on. Rap lyrics are rarely good, either, though there are some exceptions.

Lately I've had trouble finding music, since I don't have time to look for it. I do like really popular music for the most part, so I can get a list of the most popular songs and get a good selection from that, but that isn't updated as fast as I'd like.

Me, I really like Pete Seeger, the Beatles, Woody Gutherie. I have recently discovered a more modern singer, Alexa Wilkinson. She sings mainly about love, and my favorite song of hers right now is "Giving you everything"which have decided is about a girl who really misses a guy, butis glad about some choices she made in life.

Okay...this is crazy, but my favorite music right now is some of the Star Trek themes, especially the Enterprise theme, the only theme song with words. Here it is-
It's been a long road
Gettin from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally here
And I will see my dreams come alive at night
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna change my mind

(Chorus)

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
No one's going to bend nor break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith
I've got faith
Faith of the heart

The montage that goes with it is excellent, also. What I enjoy about the song is how it talks about (this would make more sense in you see the show) doing what you know is right, and not being afraid of things. I also like he Voyager theme, but it has no lyrics.
It's an honor to die brave and bold...

I have ridiculously broad taste in music. I will pretty much listen to anything once-and more than once if I like it. To give you an idea-at the moment I am listening to a play list that includes in part Pink, Frank Sinatra, Peter Paul and Mary, portions of the soundtrack of Cabaret (the Liza version of course....) and an Adagio from Khachaturian's Spartacus (lord there's a piece of music to die for....)

I have NO good explanation for WHY I like what I like-but the reason my tastes are so eclectic is because of my mother-who was (and is) a brilliant guitarist-and would basically listen to anything (and the learn to play it-an ability I found QUITE irritating when I took up the guitar myself  ). So I grew up with folk music, rock banks, pop, the Beach Boys, the Beetles, Three Dog Night (whee)-pretty much whatever she was listening to-and she was listening to music all the time.

Hmm-classical actually probably makes up the majority of my collection in terms of a single genre of music. I got hooked on much of that in college when someone I was dating at the time introduced me to Dvorak's New World Symphony and Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings-a piece that literally brought me to tears the first time heard it. I adore good classical because it can evoke SO many emotions without words.

I'm also a fan of Broadway musicals so that also makes up a fair percentage of my collection (and if you've never listened to Les Mis-you're really missing out).

Generally I find new music in classical or Broadway by hunting them-I tend to hunt down new pieces of classical music-or pick up recordings of things when I've seen something in concert or heard it on the local classical station. Broadway-well, I generally follow what's new there fairly closely-so if something good comes along I'll find it. For other types of music it is often what friends introduce me to-including a few odds and ends I've picked up here (I believe it was Soch who may have introduced me Rammestein as a matter of fact... ). I also have found some things I enjoy listening to Pandora-I rather like the way things will show up that I've never heard before using that. I have a Roku and a TV with surround-so I often just play Pandora through my Roku. I haven't experimented with the Amazon freebies-but I will and thanks for the suggestion Tx.

Dislikes-if anything it would be country. There IS some country I listen to and enjoy-but it is probably the "smallest" item in my personal collection-although I admit some of that is a bias learned as a child-I grew up in the days of Hee-haw-and DESPISED that show as a kid-so I admit my bias may be a bit unfair in this area.

These days I'm VERY slowly working on ripping my CD's to my computer-a LONG process. Other than that I typically will by individual songs or tracks on line-and mostly from Amazon since most of their stuff is compatible with almost any device. At some point I need to learn how the heck to get some of this on my phone (hey-I'm ALWAYS 2 years behind the latest technology-so a phone that plays music is a whole new world to me....)

Things everyone should hear at least once? Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. Lots of others-but oh god that one....

I'll listen to just about anything. If it sounds good, I'll play it. I just recently got the newest Skinny Puppy (listening to Puppy as I type!! lol) and the newest oHgr albums so I've been listening to nothing but gothic/dark industrial for the last couple of weeks. But I try to switch it up alot. I'll go from listening to the Grateful Dead, to Skinny Puppy, to In Flames, to Vildhjarta, to old school rap, with some Patsy Cline thrown in for good measure! The people I work with can't figure me out LOL!!! My roommate thinks I'm crazy too! I'll be sitting there crocheting something delicate and lacy (I like doilies!!) while listening to Death Metal or techno.

The last concert I went to was Exodus, Rob Zombie (that man put on one hell of a show!!!!!!!! Would love to see Zombie again!!!!!) and Slayer. I listened to Fionna Apple's first CD on the way to the concert!!

As to why I like the music I do, I have no idea. I grew up listening to country and classic rock. Heard my first Motley Crue album (Dr. Feelgood) and it was all over from there. And I got lucky when I met my husband cause he's pretty much the same way. There are things that I enjoy that he won't listen to but that's okay, there are plenty of other things to listen to!!

I'll listen to pretty much anything. There are certain songs or artists I don't like, but there is no single genre of music I can honestly say I dislike. I can't even tell you what genre some of my favorite bands are classified as- genre matters that little to me. (My playlist just went from Mark Chestnutt to Metallica, by the way.)

Overall, I'm a lyrics person. I like songs with meaning to them. My favorite singer is Julia Ecklar, who writes and sings amazing filk songs that tell stories. Stories that you'd find in a sci-fi/fantasy book. It's sad that most people I talk to have never heard of her.

The lyrics make or break a song for me. I have little to no musical talent and I can't tell what key a song is in to save my life, and it doesn't matter. I'm in love with the English language, and that's all I need from the music I listen to. I can't listen to music in other languages without knowing what the lyrics mean, for example.

My collection isn't huge- most of my music-listening is done through Grooveshark or Youtube, because I just plain can't afford to buy my own copy. I sometimes get CDs as gifts, but not often, so my collection grows slowly, when it goes at all.

Ah, music... I'm not very discriminatory, but for some reason I don't like jazz very much. Generally I prefer stuff with a good beat - rock, rap, techno, etc. - but depending on the situation and the mood, there's nothing wrong with a little classical or country.

In regards to bands, I can name some of the bands I like, but I'm not a hardcore fan of any of them - I don't even have any band shirts. Muse, Depeche Mode, Death Cab for Cutie, Red Hot Chili Peppers... the list goes on.

I enjoy it when lyrics have a decent meaning to them, but at times they can ruin a song (ex. all religious songs >_>). I don't mind nonsense lyrics either, as then I can interpret the song however I want. Religious songs, I like the music itself, but don't like the subject matter, so I avoid it when I can.

I don't pirate - I don't know how to, and would probably end up getting viruses and such. I do enjoy free music when I can get it though, ex. ComradeF.

I've never been to a non-classical concert, and I've only been to classical music concerts because my parents insisted. I just don't understand it.

I'm an avid music buyer on iTunes, because I think that pirating is dishonest and as bad as it sounds IMHO. My dad does sometimes, but I hate it, personally.

I am not very particular in my music choices, but I like certain genres; pop/hip-hop and alternative rock. I like great singers like ADELE, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, and Mary J Blige. I like Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, and Breathe Carolina. But I also like bands like Three Days Grace, Evanescence, Sick Puppies, and Linkin Park. So I pretty much listen and buy what I find that is great on Pandora ( <3 ).

Pandora is really great, because it's perfect for me. I like music that is similar to the things I like. That is how I found Evanescence and Michelle Branch, and they are great. I occasionally listen to classic rock like Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes (but those are my mom's songs XD ).

I buy albums of alternative rock, like Fallen by Evanescence and One-X by Three Days Grace. They're great, because I never get sick of them. The thing about hip-hop/pop is that is instantly gets old. So, if you asked me my favorite overall genre, I'd say rock, because I like rock-n-roll, classic rock, and alternative. I live in a ghetto-ish neighborhood centered around rap and hip-hop, so I'm basically a compromise in the making.

I love talking about music to people; it's one of my favorite subjects. This crazy old Crazy could ramble on and on about playing drums and writing lyrics (derply, I may add). So my question to everyone is this; what represents your favorite genre in you, lyrics, rhythm, instruments, etc.?

The Futurist by Robert Downey jr.

Post by Silberwind »

Good morning everyone!

Some days ago i bought Robert Downey jr.'s CD "The Futurist" and i really like it. But i had some problems with interpreting the lyrics (not only because i'm from Germany). In my opinion you have to construe much in there to get the real content. Like the poem of E.E. Cummings:
"Me up at does
out of the floor
quietly Stare
a poisoned mouse

still who alive
is asking What
have i done that
You wouldn't have"

I 'd never thought the writing and grammar mistakes were there, because the poisoned, dieing mouse said this. But my english teacher told me so.

Do you know his songs and could help me with the meaning?

Greetings,
Silberwind
