I just broke 7,000 names in my family tree! Last month y step father's sister came by with all of her family history info so that I could go through it. She had two giant folders. One for their maternal line and one fr their paternal line. I finished the maternal line two weeks ago and scanned various documents; marriage certificates, obituaries, etc. I've been working through the paternal line folder and I'm not even half way through.
My small mound of names makes feel like a big fat dragon sitting on her hoard! All mine! Steal at your peril!
Last week, the main thing i was working on was scanning old family photographs. I went to visit my maternal grandparent and got to talking and my grandfather pulls out a photo album full of pictures I've never seen. I asked to borrow it and then spent my days scanning them. The oldest picture was of my mother's father's mother as a baby with her own mother in 1884. A picture like that is just so precious!
Plus, I'll make my tree so pretty with all the new faces to add to it!

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
I cross stitch. My mom taught me when I was about 12 and I seem to have periods of stitching and non-stitching. I am a part of forum of gamer crafters and they've really wet my appetite to stitch again and I LOVE making geeky/gamery things! Currently I'm working on a kit for my hubby of a Celtic Seasons scene for a donation to his Irish speaking group for their upcoming immersion weekend. I really need to get going on it to get it finished. The group I mentioned (www.spritestitch.com if anyone is interested and they do more than just cross stitching there) also takes part in a yearly quilt making thing to send to the Child's Play charity where we cross stitch quilt squares and send them to the lady that makes the quilts and then they get auctioned off for the charity. The squares are based off games. This year I am doing a squared off the title screen for an old NES game called Snow Bros. Last year I did a square of Q-Bert. Here are some of pics of my work recently - http://meitow.deviantart.com/gallery/

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
Hi! I absolutely love yarncrafts!
I have been knitting for almost three years and crocheting for about six months. Among the things I am most proud of that I have made are:
Three scarves, all matching, that I gave to my triplet cousins
A pair of mittens for my grandma
A Katniss Cowl
Many many hats
and a matching set of bookmarks for all of the teachers who have taught me this year

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
More sewing for me! After making my Cap dress for the movie premier, I decided I wanted to do a Winter Soldier cosplay now that I'm fully devoted and in love to that tragic baby.
My work so far has been altering this leather jacket I bought on Ebay, first removing the left sleeve, cutting the fabric cuffs off, and then I'm adding leather straps that go across the chest. Right now the straps are pinned on, but I'll add hook/eye closures to secure them and straighten them out. I also need to add about 3-4 more straps to the bottom to hide the fabric part since it all needs to be leather.

I'm not sewing at the moment. Been doing more crocheting since I found the mole pattern from my high school chemistry class. For those who don't know, a mole of an element/substance is equal to the molar mass of that element/substance and has 6.022 * 10^23 atoms/molecules of that element/substance. For a fun project in high school my chemistry teacher gave us a pattern to make a plushie mole (the animal), but that was to be just the base. We were supposed to add to it to make it more interesting. She showed us previous examples, one was a "Sherlock Holmes" mole, then there was a "Mad Scientist" mole; complete with crazy white hair and shredded lab coat, and a couple of others I don't remember. Anyway, I had a bunch of leftover bits of yarn that weren't really big enough for me to do anything with, so I crocheted what ended up being a rainbow mole. I even stuffed it with the leftover bits of yarn. My teacher loved it so much she kept it. I wanted to make another, but lost the pattern. An internet search decades (yes I am dating myself) later and I found an online copy of the pattern, and I've been croceting moles like crazy since. I also made a pattern for a bird that I'm trying out. Hoping it will turn out right.
I'm starting on a new jewelry design today, hopefully they'll turn out like I want them too.
Edit: And finished. What do you think? Might change the design some.

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
I crochet.
Currently working with sculpey because I'm going to teach a class on making jewelry with sculpey and I want to make a demo piece. Had to make two because the first one burned because I forgot to lower the temperature on the oven. That, and it wasn't quite what I had wanted to do. The second one is in the oven now, and is more like what I imagined. While it's cooking I'm working on a rose cause I'm bored waiting for it to finish. It's actually coming out pretty good, but I realized to keep the petals all the same I need a stencil, so I made one. Just need to bake it so I can finish. Also need a stencil for the leaves now that I think about it.
Edit: Second demo piece done. Stencil for both petals and leaves done. Rose made and awaiting oven pre-heat to finish before I bake it. It came out pretty cool. Actually looks like a rose, I think. Will post pics once it's done.
Edit 2: So here's the rose, what do ya'll think? http://unicornsky2982.deviantart.com/ar ... -467138880

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
I've done some needlefelting, its quite repetitive, also quite easy to stab yourself. But it is easy, the tools are cheap and fairly easily come by, and you can (sort of) sit in front of the TV with it. You do need to study anatomy first if you are going to make convincing animals, having an idea where the muscle groups go is useful, and also use reference pictures for colour and patterns and conformation. ie don't try and do a tabby cat off the top of your head!Silenxia wrote:Does anyone know much about Felting? When I was at the craft store once, I found a cool book with felt animals that you could try to make and I saw on Google and DA all the creations that one could make. I plan to try it out myself (maybe memorialize my poor bunny as a little felt creature so I can have her close always...RIP Yelly).
I'm starting to make lampwork beads - anyone else tried this? So far I've done one taster session which was great, and going to do a whole day course next weekend to learn a little bit more before deciding whether I want to go on and learn properly and maybe get the gear for myself.
Thank you to everyone who gifted me

Re: Crafting and Hobbies
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make little snap buttons stick and tough military fabric? I'm just trying to attach these fasteners so I can snap my costume bracelets on, but I suck at sewing and those didn't stay, so I brought out the big guns and used superglue but those didn't stay, and honestly I'm just not sure what else to use. Help? I can provide pictures if need be on what I'm trying to attach, etc.
