I live in ...hic... a place wwhere ciity ...hic... mmeeetsh countwy, litterally. Jusht ...hic... a mile down ish farmland and a miile up ishh your shtandard main shtweet shhoopping shtwip. Ash shuch ...hic... we can shee anyding from poshhumsh to foxesh to deer to pigeonsh. Recenttly I'vee been ttwyying to take a picture of whhaat appearsh to be a ...hic... brownn norrdern ...hic... mockingbird. It hash dee right featuresh, diet(firsht poppped up pooping on my car), and shong. It hash de white barsh on itsh wongggssh and de bold white shtweaksh on itsh long tail feeadersh. But ...hic... no mattter how I lloook it up I amunable ...hic... to find proof of a brown mockingbird oiitshide of dishh little camera shhy bbird.


But gett dish, widin aa 5 mile ...hic... raddiush dere ish a piebald piigeon aand anoder pigeon wassh patched black. Datshjisht ...hic... birdsh, de ddeer alsho have piieballding and shome of de local foxesh are almosht black to shlick shilver iin ccoloor(I know datsh a ...hic... naturaal mutationn but itsh shupposhed to be rare!)

Oh I will but just yesterday, as I was washing the doshes and unable to properly grab my pho won the other sideof the room, I found out something, there are 2 brown mockingbirds! They seem to either be a mates pair or nestmates(albiet the latter seems more likely.) So now I'm need to try and take a picture of both xD.

I did mention in this in the How was Your Day thread, but for freshers. And because tomorrow will be a week since it happened. So later that Sunday, my mom and I were relaxing at home. Every so often we would hear weird noses but could find nothing out of place. Finally my mom opened the door which contains our air and heat...surprise! There was a bird in there. We opened the door and it flew out, then my mom opened the door to our deck and out it flew and away.

It was so weird! But we believe it came in through the roof and ended up traveling down from the apartment upstairs.

Poor thing, if we had not been home to hear it...then it might have died and we would not know until it got stinky. Ew.

As for the topic of wildlife...I started working at a bird-rescue center as the "corvid-guy" a few weeks ago and I'm loving it! It's really busy this time of the year and though the work is really hard (it's not just feedingg baby birds) and you do see a lot of sad stories it is so worth it when you see the ones that make it.

I help out wherever I can but have become quickly known for my connection with corvids. Always loved them but that love has only grown now I work with them on an almost daily basis.

You wouldn't believe how smart these birds are if anyone told you. It is one thing to read about it or observe it in the wild but being so up close and personal these guys and gals amaze me every single time. It does make the work a bit harder though as they imprint on humans quite fast and we don't want that! Tame crows, jackdaws and such can become a real menace...

There are about five bears in the woods around my house. Two are fully grown, one of which has three cubs. In short, the bears don't seem to understand the concept of territory and constantly wander into our yard. Once I looked out the window, and there was a bear trying to get into the barbecue.

Just heard the rattle of the metal food dishes on the front porch for the park cat. Turned on the light to see if it was Bobby-girl....nope, "trash panda". My husband though the food bag on the porch was chewed by the cat because we were late/forgetful in feeding her. I thought it looked like the work of something else and now we know I was right. So now we have to figure out a different way to store the cat food...don't want to bring it in as we are battling ants enough as it is.

As far as storing the bag of food, I use a regular storage tote for mine. If the critter after it goes through plastic, a metal can with a secure lid is better. When we had horses, we kept the grain in 55 gallon drums that corn syrup had come in.
I have no ideas for securing food left out for the cat, though.

Today I took my kids outside to enjoy the nice weather before it began to storm and I found an interesting sight. On a cement slab that we use for cars and other riding toys, I noticed a strange little dark patch which revealed to be a caterpillar and a swarm of small ants. I never did figure out if the caterpillar was dead or if it was slowly being bitten and crawled all over by ants. Those ants are pretty clever though. If you step on another bug and one finds it, then here comes backup...and they will work very hard to get that bug home. I am not sure if they ever did get it home, but I assume they managed to maneuver it through the grass.

Ants, ants, ants are everywhere. Marching like an army, running home to mommy. Good for tickling a bird, or was that a joke they heard?

I love the old Animal Alphabet. My favorite songs were Armadillo, Hyena, Insects, but it was all good.

There's a university campus nearby to my apartment complex that holds home to a bunch of stray/wild cats. Most of them are terrified of anything or anyone that comes near them, but a few of them will actually come to you if you offer them food (or pretend to have food for them. ). Some might even brush up against you if you play with them or satisfy their many desires.

Plus, there's also quite a few magpies going around a lot of the time and they're pretty nice to look at, despite being rather common.

It's really amazing to me to see the way that, even in "developed" areas, the wildlife or surrounding creatures really affect and, in my opinion, improve the atmosphere and environment. I don't think we were ever meant to be as cut off from the animals as we sometimes tend to be. Animals are just pretty darn cool, if you ask me.
