Re: Pets
Y'know... if this was anyone but Tristan, I'd be hitting the report button for spamming/ trolling/ general offtopicness.Tristan wrote:I wishh I had a ...hic... pet pptterodactyl.
I wonder if Tristan is actually drunk as well as magi-drunk?

Anywho, does anyone know the normal behaviors for cat "begging?" My cat always acts overly affectionate when he begs for food-sitting next to the table and rolling over on his side and turning his head upside down, making little reaching motions for the food. I was just curious if a lot of cats do this. Do cats even have the capability to conceptualize "if I act cute/submissive, I might get food?"

I think that cats are plenty smart. One of my cats likes to beg for attention. I have never had a cat that begged for food, however.

Re: Pets
Yes, cats beg. My cats, usually don't, but little Oliver knows that when the spoon starts to clink on the bowl, I'm almost done with my morning cereal and I will most likely put the bowl down and let them lick up the dregs from the bottom. Problem is, he starts getting all up in my face before I'm done. Once in a while, if I have meaty dinner, I'll have cats in my face as soon as I sit down. Particularly the younger two, Oliver and Hobbit. Mostly I think it's just that it smells good, and they want some and haven't really learned the rules yet because they are young. Another cat of mine, Ki'Lin, I can't leave food unattended, because if I do, I will come back to find her nomming it for me.Raneth wrote:Anywho, does anyone know the normal behaviors for cat "begging?" As to the specific "If I act cute/submissive, I might get food", more than likely, it's not quite that well thought out, but more of a "Getting in their face doesn't work, they get mad" "ignoring them doesn't work, because then they forget" "Sitting quietly and patiently doesn't work because they don't notice me" "rolling around like a dork DOES work, yay!" But, not so much a fully thought out, "If I act cute/ submissive" as "This behavior sometimes results in acquiring what I want, so I'm going to keep trying it in hopes that it works THIS time".

I think it is quite individual to the specific cat, but yes cats certainly do beg - as Hawke said, whatever works to get your attention. His reactions sound very like a cat playing with string, just he's hoping for something better! One of my current cats, Phoebe, sits at my feet and waives a paw in my general direction, or pats my leg. A previous cat would claw the sofa next to me and give me a *look* (which didn't work, she just got shouted at - some of them never learn!), whilst another would lie on the back of the sofa and peer over my shoulder, until removed. I don't approve of animals beggingRaneth wrote: Anywho, does anyone know the normal behaviors for cat "begging?" On a different note we've just found out that Phoebe, to go with her diabetes and failing kidneys, now has a cancerous tumour in her mouth - inopperable, and won't respond to chemo... so it's just a case of waiting for the end now.

*HUGS* I'm sorry, hun. That's just awful. I hope she stays with you a long while before going quickly and peacefully.Brynmala wrote:On a different note we've just found out that Phoebe, to go with her diabetes and failing kidneys, now has a cancerous tumour in her mouth - inopperable, and won't respond to chemo... so it's just a case of waiting for the end now.

Thank you, I hope that too, and I'll be keeping a sharp eye for the day life turns sour for her, so she can be helped on her way She's 16 now and I've had her for 6 years - I never expected to have her this long to be honest, given the other medical problems she has, so I'm grateful for that time.TNHawke wrote:*HUGS* I'm sorry, hun.
