Re: Pets
I used to have a pair of parakeets but they died
One (yellow/green female) was scratched by a cat who somehow got through the cage door. I accidentally left the cage outside one night because it was so stuffy and humid inside ><
The other one (blue male) died a year later, presumably of natural causes.
Something I noticed that confused me: The blue parakeet liked to bury his head in the yellow's feathers. Eventually his face turned yellow. What happened there?
I was in fourth grade when my first bird was "murdered" and I was crying everywhere I went. Sad times...
I'm looking forward to adopting a cat when my allergies get better (thanks to allergy shots )

Re: Pets
Yellow faced blue keets are more rare than white-faced blue. But it's genetics that determine which it is. It would not have changed due to touching the other keet. "burying his face in her feathers"- he was probably just preening her. That's normal.
I know baby keets have barring down their foreheads that fades as they grow older and molt, I suppose it's possible the yellow came in after the molt, but I don't recall having ever encountered such a thing in my rather extensive keet experience.
Are you absolutely certain that after your upset over the yellow's death, that your blue one didn't die and then was replaced by a similar bird- but one who happened to have a yellow face?
I had a friend who's parents did that with goldfish on her. I watched them a lot and noticed things like fins changing length (slightly, but they did). Her parents admitted to it many years later. ><

Re: Pets
Just a reminder; rats need their rails for balance and temperature control. Just because a certain mutation looks cool doesn't mean we should breed them. I had plenty of nude rats but always accidents at birth and not those intentionally bred.
Manx rats(which is their official) name are mutations that in my opinion should also not be bred. They frequently have bladder problems, deformed hips and back.
Of course many ratteries will claim they only breed to the highest standards but you will never see the drop-outs in a litter. If you really like these rats get an extremely good rattery but be aware that there's been a lot of hurt involved.

Re: Pets
I'm not entirely sure whether this counts under pets (doesn't quite fit livestock either to my mind), but my partner was given a horse this morning. Not any old horse either, but an Arab. Somewhat gobsmacked by this - I thought being given horses, especially Arabs only happened in kiddies pony books!
Said horse is known to us, and saying he's 'unruly' is probably being charitable, but we'll see. A bit of stability and firm handling should work wonders. Hope he doesn't turn out to be the proverbial gift horse!

Re: Pets
Wow, that's incredible! Do you guys have the knowledge, room and funds to take care of him?

Re: Pets
I know, isn't it! It's every horse-mad kid's dream come true, just it's happened to her at 40+! I suspect there may be blogging... Nothing is signed and sealed yet, but we are so excited anyway.
We have the experience - we have 2 horses already, so I hope he'll just fit in (tho now with two geldings and a mare I suspect there may be some dominance issues), and OH has had ponies since she was 5. We sort of have the space, the grazing is not marvelous, but we can cope with extra hay. As for the funds... they'll be found from somewhere, at least we don't need to pay livery. Is it sensible? probably not, but we're gonna do it anyway.
We went to see him this evening, and took some photos... I'll sort one out and see if I can get it posted.

Prophet - the new one. Doesn't look very Araby, but it's obvious when he moves.

Nice! He looks like the Quarter horse/ Arabians we see a lot out here. They tend to be a good, solid mix. Good luck with him!

Re: Pets
Thanks we'll see how it goes, we think most of his problems stem from insecurity so we hope a bit of stability in his life will work wonders. If he were a dog we'd be calling int fear aggression.
He looks like a Welsh C cross to me to be honest, not having much in the way of QHs around here . But apparently he's pure bred and he's supposed to be Crabbet breeding (the colour sort of gives that away!) so chunkier, smaller and not so extreme as most arabs, but I've yet to see his pedigree, so who knows. He's also 17 so not a spring chicken. He'll still be the youngest on our yard tho!
