Larathen proceeded along normally in his studies until he became a rank two magi, when he abruptly seemed either unwilling or unable to progress further - whether because of some lingering uncharacteristic resentment, memories of horror stories told by his siblings (even though he knew they weren't true), or something else entirely isn't clear even to him. Finally, Rykian intervened and insisted on becoming his mentor, and the two proved to be a surprisingly good match. Larathen may still lack the ambition to become a truly great magi, but at least he's once again progressing in his studies.
The latest setback to his progress is his new status as a cursed magi. While he was accompanying Rykian on an expedition to the Callisto Island to investigate some old ruins, he suddenly and inexplicably was transformed into a black winged cat (and kept doing so at random intervals). The best researchers and healers at the Keep haven't been able to find a cause or a cure, but at least winged cats are harmless enough that he doesn't really need guards. Larathen doesn't seem to be especially bothered by his transformation, but he's always had some talent for hiding his real feelings. Favored Creature: Cora, a rewin dragon (usually accompanied by Corwin, her mate). Powers and Skills: Like Rykian, he doesn't really have any of the traditional elemental specialties, though he does have some skill with air magic (and is thus weak against earth magic). He also shares his mentor's interest in old lore, though he still sometimes lacks the necessary experience to temper his credulity. Larathen's strong interest in people sometimes makes him a little too trusting - he hasn't been robbed (yet), but is a little too willing to believe the best of people. His final skill is a growing talent for constructing small charms and tokens - nothing ground-breaking or earth-shattering, but at least a good way to earn some money. I've posted Rykian's extremely long intro and am waiting to have the time to sit down and write Larathen's (probably) equally long intro - with luck I'll be able to get that posted today. Sorry, I haven't had much time for any long-form writing lately, but that should be changing soon.
