In Kathyrn Lasky's series Wolves of the Beyond, a wolf pup had been born with a perceived deformity, a splayed paw with a spiral imprint on the footpad. Abandoned by his pack, he was adopted by a Grizzly who had just lost her own cub, who named him Faolan, which meant "Gift." Faolan grew and later returned to his pack, Being deformed, he was at the bottom of the wolf social order, and over time proved his worth and worked his way up to becoming an honored and respected wolf, despite his deformity. His intelligence was needed, for the world of the Beyond was at the beginning of an Ice Age, and Faolan and his mate Edme would eventually lead the wolves that survived starvation and physical calamities across an Ice Bridge to a new world called the Distant Blue. While the book series is written for upper Elementary/Middle School readers, the tone is akin to Watership Down, and is enjoyable for readers of all ages.

Faolan was described as having fur that was silvery, and it looked as if the stars had fallen into it. Later in the series it had lightened and become even more star like, and so the Faded Borean Wolf was chosen to represent him:


Edme, Faolan's mate, was described as being tawny, with reddish fur, and so the Common Borean Wolf was used to represent her:


Eggs cannot be frozen, hatchlings cannot be frozen, and family members cannot be released. Breeding with other families is permitted.
