Jasper Koivu

Jasper sighed again, rubbing a hand tiredly over his face. Yet again, the knight was right and he hated it. The man couldn't help that he believed he was better than people below him and that he didn't need the help of others. He was far too used to the persona and found it hard to turn it off. Something welled up inside of him, telling him to apologize, but he bit it back and cursed at himself mentally for thinking of such a worthless, pitiful action. He had no need to apologize to the man who was being just as rude and disrespectful.

It would be one hell of a long trip.

As he calmed down, Jasper took small glances to the knight beside him, noting that the man was still on edge as well, and probably on high alert for any danger. He didn't blame the man at all, but it was also his job to protect Jasper no matter what, even giving up his own life for the royal. It was what every knight was taught. He caught the same tone he was using, and growled lightly before trying to drop the tone entirely. It was a hard task to do however, and he was failing miserably with the act. At the mention of what parts of his land he had visited, Jasper had to take a moment to think about the question. He ignored the annoyed tone in the knights voice for the time being.

"Well... there's a nice kingdom on the other side of the land, met a nice lady there once. Did some political work and traded for crops" Jasper said, recalling the kingdom and the not so nice encounter with said lady. It was one of his potential wives, and he had deliberately annoyed the shit out of her for fun. "A settlement up in the mountains was having trouble with wolves and panthers killing their livestock and children, dealt with that." This discussion went on for a while, describing what part of his land he had visited, and he felt the need to prove what he had done there just to show he was capable of helping his people, as well as not just being known as a complete asshole. He took pride in the work he had done, and with how many people he had helped.

As he was explaining his travels and duties, he watched as Dermric patted himself down and soon produced a flask. He raised an eyebrow at first, a suspicious look on his face. It was known that most knights were drunks, but he hadn't taken the knight before him to be one. He seemed too clear headed. And that he was when the knight soon proved him wrong on his initial thought. "I would have worried if my life was left in the hands of a drunk. Thank you." He said, snickering a bit, a small laugh escaping his lips as he teased the knight. He paused his story for the time, taking a drink from it. However, he left some of it for Dermric and handed it back to him. "You need to drink too. I'm not dragging your ass to the settlement," he teased again, trying to lighten the mood before he finally finished his story.

By the time Jasper had finished, Dermric had looked behind them and began to speak. The prince agreed with him, and nodded as he followed the knight wherever he went. "Yeah, the settlement isn't on the beaten path anyways. There's a little trail leading, but unless you know what to look for you can easily get lost." He explained, brushing sweat from his face with the back of his sleeve.

Dermric looked to the prince, as he spoke about visiting different areas of the kingdom. He tried to picture the names of the places and their locations. Some of them he recognized, others he would have needed a name to know what the prince was talking about.

"You should really remember the names of the places you visit." He stated, his voice void of the irritation that had once been there. The knight pushed back the nagging thoughts to chew out the prince on the proper ways of going about things. But he took a deep breath and sighed, calming himself again.

"I rarely drink." Dermric again stated, though this time his tone hinted at bafflement, as if the prince would ever think that way. But he dropped the subject immediately, giving only a small chuckle at the prince's attempted joke to lighten the mood. But he took the flask back with nod, gulping down what little water was left.

The knight turned off the road, looking back to make sure he still had the prince following. Thankfully they were heading into tall grasses. Tall enough even to hide the prince. Soon after though, the grasses would give way to forest and finally the village that was just beyound.

"We're just a few hours away now." He said aloud, reminding himself that they could maybe get a bit of rest when they got there. Hopefully they could gather a few supplies as well and something...wearable for the prince other then what looked like sleep wear. He doubted the village carried armor. But he would do just fine in the chain mail and hard leather until he found something that was suitable to him.

Jasper Koivu

Jasper let out a quiet groan, rubbing at his face tiredly and in aggravation. He was trying hard to prove to the knight he could be a decent royal, and every time something back fired in his face. It was really becoming old and tiresome and he was getting bored of it. Though the lack of aggravation and annoyance in the knights voice brought him down from his own and he took a deep breath. "Could you stop for just one minute of criticizing me?" He asked, his voice slightly quiet. The prince wasn't an imbecile, of course he remembered the names of the places he had visited. Sure, they sometimes jumbled up from the vast quantity of land under his father's rule, but he generally had a pretty good idea of the places he had been.

"I only really started to explore the kingdom a year or so ago... give me a break, sheesh." Jasper said, rolling his eyes as he sighed. "It's a lot to remember, you got the politics, the customs, the culture... how to properly act in the presence of officials. It doesn't matter if you're the King of the entire nation, you still have to remember everything down to a fine T to be a good ruler. I've been studying all of my life, and I'm still no where as great as my father is." The prince said, eyeing Dermric.

At the mention of drinking, Jasper let out a laugh, shaking his head. "You really need to learn to take a joke..." He said, snickering a little despite the previous conversation. It seemed Jasper could also flip flop his emotions and be a little less cruel, or at least acted like it at the time. "I'm used to sparing with drunk idiots and watching the knights lose their shit at night, excuse me if I don't automatically assume all of my knights are natural drunks." He said with a shrug.

Jasper began to wade his way through the grass as he followed behind Dermric, his hands brushing against the tops of the blades. He was fascinated once more by the beauty of the nature that lied just outside his reach. "You know... I'd been to many kingdoms, but I don't think I've ever just taken the time to be outside." He said, a genuine tone to his voice, as if he were actually trying to make small talk. "Good. I could certainly go for some food right now." Jasper said, chuckling when his stomach growled and he shook his head.

"Now where's the fun in that?" The short knight chuckled at the prince's question. He scratched at his beard, an entertaining smile appearing on his face. And even as the heir tried to defend himself with the sentences afterwards, Dermric couldn't help but laugh.

"There's more to ruling a kingdom then that, young prince." He said politely, restoring his good mood. And even with the comment after, Dermric kept the smile on his face, this time bantering back at the prince, "Sometimes the drunks are fun to be around. It's poor entertainment at best." He rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled some more, as if remembering some of the times he had actually gone out.

As they walked through the tall grasses, the prince spoke, this time seeming to want to make small talk. But the knight didn't have anything to say to his words. But he certainly knew what the prince was talking about. He remembered a time when he was fascinated with just walking out side, just being in nature. Now though it seemed that the knight cared little for the wonders of the world he walked through. He was pulled from his thoughts though, as the shouts of people rang through the air. The thunder of hooves came next.

"Down!" He hissed as Dermric jumped over to the prince and pulled him down into a crouch. But instead of continuing, the hooves came to sudden stop. The knight's heart began to race as he realized they may have been spotted. He put a finger to his lips, signalling for the young man to be quiet.

"We know you're there, knight!" Dermric's eyes narrowed as one of the men on horseback shouted out.
He was relieved that they hadn't noticed the prince or didn't know who he was if they did. He was astonished that the Gauldain Knights had reached this point so fast. Or perhaps they were a patrolling unit, sent ahead.

"Quit hiding!" Said the same voice. The short knight looked to Prince Jasper. Dermric held determination in his eyes as he looked at the prince. He shook his head quietly to the heir, hoping he would get the message not follow him. But just to make sure he whispered to him.

"Stay put. Do not move from this spot." He then moved from his crouch and turned around, standing to walk towards the band of enemy knights. He held his hands up in a surrender position as he exited the grass. Despite the gesture, one of the Gauldian Knights pulled a sword on him. They exchanged a few words and Dermric answered the questions that were asked of him.

At one point the sword had reached his neck, the cold, steel tip pressing against his skin. But the short knight never flinched at it nor did he reach to remove the object. He pointed down the road as the knight in charge asked him if he seen the royal family. Trusting Dermric's word, they thanked him and the sword was removed from his throat and the band road off.

The knight watched the Gauldian band leave until they were nothing but distant dots on the horizon. Sighing he turned and walked back into the tall grass. He waited through it until he came upon the prince again.

"I doubt they'll get far before they realize I gave them false information." But even as he said it a grin crossed his face, as if it were a game to him. Though he would admit, it was rather amusing that they would so willingly trust another knight's word.

Jasper Koivu

Jasper glared Dermric playfully, a small growl escaping his lips. "You're such an ass," he said with a roll of his eyes and a chuckle. He didn't know why he had suddenly changed his attitude, and why he no longer felt much anger towards the man, but he was welcoming the change in the stressful times. Jasper would need a friend, and what better friend to have than one that can defend his life and keep him alive long enough to see his family again.

At the mention of there being more to running a kingdom than the simple things Jasper had spoke of, he sighed a little. "Yeah, I know. My father will be ruler for a great deal many more years though before I ever inherit the throne, so." He shrugged his shoulders, running a hand through his messy hair and pulling twigs and leaves from it as they idly chatted as if they were long time friends. "Hell, I might be an old geezer myself by then." He said with a more wholehearted laugh, shaking his head.

Jasper grinned, "yeah but drunks are only temporary amusement." The prince wasn't a big drinker, contrary to the stereotypes and the implications that he did. The very few times he found himself drinking, he found he didn't like the feeling, and the fear of letting slip secrets and sensitive information weighed heavily on his mind, leaving him a tense, paranoid drunk, certainly something no one wanted to be around.

The prince's eyes grew wide at the sudden intrusion of shouts and voices and then the deafening sound of hooves meeting the ground. The soldiers were directly behind them, and had moved so quickly that there was little warning. Jasper froze, unsure of what to do but soon he was pulled down into the grass, and he crumbled down into it, shocked. His heart was beating a million miles a minute, thumping loudly in his ears and making his breath hitch in his throat. He looked towards his guard, noticing that he was shushing him, and Jasper put his hand over his mouth to keep himself quiet and to keep his breath from growing heavy. He needed to stay calm and hidden.

Jasper crouched there, wide-eyed as he turned his attention to the knights on the roar. He could see the horses stamping the ground and a few knights had gotten off their horses, beginning to look through the grass. He turned to look at his guard, his mind racing to figure out a way out of the situation. It seemed that Dermric had a plan though, and while it sounded like a stupid plan, it was a plan none the less. He nodded, keeping his hand placed tight over his mouth in fear of his breath giving him away.

His eyes followed Dermric, and he feared that he would soon be killed, or taken and Jasper would be left alone with no idea how to continue. Though it seemed luck was in their favor that day as the knights spoke and soon Dermric was released and the knights moved on, leaving the pair alone. He slowly rose out of the grass as the knights left and Dermric returned to the hiding spot, and he let out a shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. "Jesus..." He grumbled, shaking his head.

He looked at his guard's face, and chuckled a bit, "thanks. We should get moving though. It's not safe anywhere near here now with those knights on the look out..." Jasper said, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

Dermric rubbed his chin and proceeded forward, still smiling brightly at his lie. But his smile faded to a blank stare as the prince bought up the fact that where they were was no longer safe. But the thought lingered in his mind, making the knight rub his chin longer.

"Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we are no longer safe anywhere. We must keep on the move. We can stay no more than hour at each place we stop at." But even the Dermric grimaced at the thought. An hour wasn't long, just barely enough to catch their breaths, restock, and move on again.

It wasn't long before the tall grasses gave way to forest. Now they were only a matter of minutes until they reached the village that was hidden here. They were walking in silence again. Which suited Dermric just fine. He needed to think ahead. If they could make a few detours on the way to the rendezvous point, the knight might be able to make their trip a little bit safer. His mind snapped back to the present as the trees parted way to reveal their destination.

"Alderfield." Said the knight as he looked up to the prince. He looked back to Alderfield as they entered the small village. Some of the people who were out looked up at them with confusion, others nodded in hello. But most of the villagers ignored them.

"Come on. An old knight should still live here. I might be able to convince him to lend you something more...wearable." he said, picking up his pace as he jolly smile returned again.

Jasper Koivu

"Yeah... I realized that." Jasper said, a frown crossing his face as a feeling of tense nervousness washed over him and he clenched his fists once more. Though he wasn't angry at his guard, instead he was just frustrated, hating the situation that they had gotten into. It was a crave situation, lives were on the line and the throne was in danger, he knew nothing would be safe as long as he was alive. He needed to get to safety, needed to get to his father and figure out how they were taking back their beloved home land.

The young prince had fallen silent, his thoughts consuming him and leaving him with little to speak of. The silence would be better for them regardless, for in the end if they were chatting they were more easily spotted. Jasper hated silence, hated the feeling of helplessness but he swallowed his pride. He looked over at Dermric, who looked like he was more at peace than the prince himself, but maybe he had just been more experienced with stressful times. The man had never had to deal with problems such as this, he had always been left in charge of petty squabbles and land or cattle disputes. He was mad at himself for not getting better acquainted with this side of the title, the darker, grittier part.

He was pulled from his thoughts and looked up when he realized that it was Dermric speaking. "Ah, yes... Alderfield." He said, his voice more quiet, more tired now. The prince was stressed, and trying to deal with his problems. He realized it wasn't a game, wasn't a joke, or a dream, this was real, so very much real. He was having trouble processing it, but he didn't want to seem incompetent to his guard, tired of the teasing and the tips and just everything in general. He rubbed at his face tiredly.

The villagers looked upon them with weary eyes and a nervous stature, but no one said anything out of line to either of them. A few had the hint of renegotiation of the prince, but couldn't quite figure it out as he didn't look himself, or arrive in his normal manner.

Jasper let out a small chuckle. "Sounds like a plan. Thanks." He said, following Dermric to where this knight lived, rubbing at his neck and shoulder.

They made there way through the village, until they came to one the many houses that lined the street. He turned to the prince as they stood at the door step. He sighed as he put a hand to his head, "Just let me do the talking, okay?"

He turned and with his fist pounded on the door, "Hemwick, open the door! I know you're in there!" He stated. There was a very muffled grumble on the other side. Dermric turned to the prince again and spoke to him, "From now on you're my squire." A bright smile crossed the knight's face. The door opened and the short knight turned to towards the sound.

A gray haired man stood in the door way, munching on a what Dermric assumed to be the last shreds of a sandwich. The elder knight looked down at him and huffed again, grumbling about the inconvenience Dermric was giving him. The guard looked up at Hemwick, a stern but happy look spread across his face.

"You owe me for last week." He stated, pointing a finger at the man. Hemwick was an old knight, retired.
But he was a man who would happily give lessons to others - at his own convenience though. But by the looks of it now, the man was annoyed. But Dermric didn't care that he had interrupted the man.

"What?" Hemwick said as the retired knight ate the last of his sandwich. He stood there then, one hand on his hip. He looked like Dermric had interrupted him during the most important time of his life. But it was always how he had reacted when it never suited the man.

"My squire needs armor." The elder knight looked behind Dermric and glanced at Jasper. Hemwick raised an eye brow and looked back to the short knight.

"Uncanny resemblance to the prince don't you think?" He stated.

"Coincidence." Came a sharp reply from the guard and Dermric roughly pushed passed Hemwick who then promptly side stepped to allow Jasper in. Hemwick rivaled Prince Jasper's height, being just shy of the prince's own head. And Dermric figured it was the only way to get some sort of free armor that would fit the young man, without going to and waiting for a smith to make it.

After Jasper had followed in, Hemwick closed the door and ruffled his hair, "Fine. He can use mine. Just make sure I get it back." The elder knight said and then he walked away, vanishing into another part of his house. The armor wasn't hard to find, as it was displayed. But because of it, it seemed to be kept in good condition.

"Chain mail first, then the hard leather. And then the actual armor itself." Dermric told Jasper. Whether the prince knew what went first didn't occur to the knight. But they had to keep up appearances. Dermric turned around and started to walk away.

"Come find us after you're done or if you need help." He said with a turn of his head. He smiled and then headed off in search of the older knight.

Jasper Koivu

Jasper chuckled, "now that's something I don't hear everyday." He followed Dermric, his hand clutching the hilt of his sword, covering the golden crest and hiding away for a moment the fact that he was the Prince. He needed to blend in, he needed to learn how to be more human, more like everyone else. He was a spoiled brat who had never had to do hard work a day in his life.

He leaned against the frame of the door, yawning widely before he ran a hand tiredly through his hair. He blinked when Dermric spoke, and gave the man a glare for a moment before a sigh escaped his lips. "Yeah, sure, alright." He said, shrugging his shoulders. Despite the smile across the knight's face, Jasper didn't feel as happy or hopeful, more dread filling the young prince than anything else.

Jasper pushed himself off the frame when the door opened, and he stayed behind Dermric, though the taller man wasn't very easily hidden behind such a short knight. He couldn't help the snicker and small laugh at the show before him, watching the two knights talk to each other, the older man looking annoyed at Dermric. The prince knew very well already how annoying the short knight could be.

"Coincidence my ass..." the prince muttered under his breath with a quiet chuckle. He crossed his arms and followed the two men into the house. He remained mostly silent though, not wishing to anger his knight and potential friend, he needed all the help he could get.

The young prince once again leaned against an empty spot of a wall, watching the two exchange words, and generally feeling like he didn't exist. He wasn't used to not having people's attention or being the center of attention, as if he was just a ghost and people could see straight through him. His ego was taking a hit, but he'd swallow down his pride and hide the reactions. He needed to survive more than he needed his ego stroked.

"Thanks," Jasper snorted, rolling his eyes as he was given the armor and he sighed to himself, his head hanging for a moment before he picked himself back up and went to change into the armor, waiting first for the pair of men to leave so he could have some sense of privacy.

He set the armor down on a nearby chair and slowly began to pull it on, not used to the weight and extent of the heavy armor, as he was only used to the training armor. "Could this shit be any heavier if it tried..." He muttered under his breath, grunting a little as he pulled on a heavy piece, and after a bit of struggling to get it on, he was done.

Jasper replaced the sword to his waist and walked out to where the pair of men were sitting. "Well, that was more difficult then it looked..." He admitted, chuckling a little nervously. "Thank you for allowing me to use it, sir." He said, bowing his head towards the older knight.

Dermric had found the retired knight in what he assumed to be the kitchen. Hemwick was sitting in a chair, feet up on the table. He had mug in hand and was casually eating what seemed to be another plate of food.

"Do you ever stop eating?" asked Dermric in a joking tone. But despite the appetite of the elder knight, he was in a fit condition. But the elder knight only shrugged at the man's question. A short pause held the air, as the shorter knight walked up to the table and leaned into it.

"Since when did you pick a squire? Hemwick asked him. Dermric hung his head in response.

"That's long a story I don't really want to talk about." He said, a small smirk coming to his face as his head turned to the other knight.

"I bet it is." Hemwick said with a smile. The two began talking after that and Hemwick eased into a better mood. The two shared stories of adventures they had been on and even some of the memories they had shared together in battle. It wasn't long though, before Jasper found the two of them. As Jasper gave his thanks to the elder knight, Hemwick nodded and smiled.

"Different then the stuff you've been using, yeah?" Dermric said pushing himself off the table he had been leaning against. "Move, jump. Test it out." He said again, a jolly smile appearing on his face. There was only one way to truly test the armor, and that was in battle. But until then, all he could have Jasper do was exercises to get him used to the weight and build up endurance.
