I found a little foreign critter on my window sill this morning. A Death's-head Hawkmoth. I live in America so this little guy is not from around here.
I'm tempted to add him to my bug collection... I don't have many European bugs...
Now where'd I put my thumb tack.

-I've never heard pinhead used. I've had to look these things up on my own.. No one in this neighbor hood likes nature apparently.
-I just looked it up with a description I had of it, it may be an american insect I've never seen. I'm not good with descriptions
-When I find an interesting or new species to me, I pin it up wings open, or however looks natural, and label it. I usually use these thin little pins to pin them up but i don't have any more left.

You probably found a tomato or tobacco hawkmoth, they're pretty similar-looking and quite common because of all the crops grown.

Hmm... I looked it up and that is a bit closer in appearance... Thanks for clearing up the confusion... Though now I'm confused because I don't recall seeing one before... Oh well...

Fun fact: we have Tobacco Hornworm caterpillars all over the place. My mom thought we had hummingbird moths for the longest time and always told me so.




Edit: that nekkid moth is beautiful. Also, I know all about that tumblr, my sister showed it to me ages ago. =D

You guys probably hate me for this in a sense, but:

moths are pretty much the only insect I am completely calm about letting stay on me. Well, that and the june bugs we get around here. >_> Caterpillars are ok too. I just don't really like to hold, or touch, a lot of animals... snakes are fine, rats are fine, chickens, dogs, cats, pigs... those are all animals I'm cool with. But they're the only ones. I don't even like to hold mice, hamsters, or parakeets. Sets me on edgeee.

Anyway, just letting you all know this so that you know that sometimes it's not always a "ew bug" thing when people don't want to hold a tarantula or something. Sometimes we're just kinda freaked out about touching any animal we don't deeply trust. >___>

I am sorry to report that I found webworms yesterday. DX

On an aspen, no less. I didn't know they even ate aspen, I thought it was mostly fruit trees. Blaaaaaaaahhh, I know they turn into lovely moths but they disfigure trees in the process, and I have this irrational hatred of webs...

I also found an adorably fuzzy caterpillar that -wasn't- a webworm, on one of the same aspens. Awww. (At least I assume it wasn't a webworm, it was about three times their size, not as incredibly fuzzy as they are, and not actually in a web.)
