The Anime Guild!

Postby Raneth » September 11th, 2011, 6:29:41 pm

I love anime. It’s pretty much my favorite medium for enjoying them good ol’ fashioned moving pictures in the TV box. And somehow, this site has gone on for a long time without a dedicated anime guild!

So, I’m starting one. This guild is a place for discussions of anime in general or any anime in particular, as well as recommendations of anime you loved or rants about anime you may have not have liked. You can also talk about the anime fandom, like cosplay, conventions, or even anime fan art and fan fiction.

Rules (more may be added as I think of them):

-Stay on topic. This is the anime guild, and we discuss anime and things related to it. You can bring up the manga or movie versions of an anime, but don’t talk about Hollywood movies, TV shows or books that have nothing to do with anime. Also, do not talk about your life or your day or anything that is clearly in no way related to anime. This is not that kind of guild.

-Talking about fan-related works is fine, but don’t plug your own stuff. This is not the place to ask for comments or critiques on your art or fiction.

-Everyone has their favorite anime characters, but please don’t turn this into a “Character x is so hot!” thread. Keep discussions at least somewhat in-depth.

-English only, and define Japanese words if you have to use them. This is an English-speaking site. I realize anime is Japanese in origin, but I don’t speak it and neither do many here.

-Be respectful! Anime is a huge medium with lots of different genres, and not everyone likes everything. Don’t attack any other users for what they may or may not like, or for any other reason. If you want to disagree with someone's recommendation, do it respectfully.

-Don't forget spoiler tags if you're talking about big important events in anime. Not everyone knows
...Okay, I totally made that up. But watch out for spoilers please!

If you obnoxiously persist in breaking any of the above rules, you will be blacklisted from the guild. I hate to do it, but I will.

Want to join? Fill out the form, and then get discussing!

Hey Rukia!

I've watched Bleach too-up to the Hueco Mundo arc. I kind of lost interest when all the fillers began, though, and I found it hard to keep track of all the characters, but it is a fun show-I still read the manga in SJ when I get a chance.

I actually really liked the Bount arc too, even though they were technically fillers. Kariya was pretty cool, and his powers were totally broken.

I really hope I'm not messing up your posts xD;

I want to join the anime guild!
Favorite anime? It used to be Zero No Tsukaima, but now it's Tiger and Bunny*
Least favorite anime? Either School Days or Okane ga Nai!**
How did you get into anime? My first experience was with Pokemon, probably, at a young age. Soon after that, my cousin had introduced me to Ouran High School Host Club and everything went down from there.
What anime are you really enjoying currently? Tiger and Bunny. I'm also watching Hanasakeru Seishounen and Ookami-san to Shichinin wo Nakama-tachi (on and off). Ao no Exorcist and Baka to Test to Shokanjuu II are pretty good, too.
(Just reasons for like/dislike below)

* The plot and art for Tiger and Bunny are simply amazing, and it’s definitely a first to see all the elements in the show blend together and fall apart again. Zero No Tsukaima is just a light romantic comedy that’s great for a younger (but not so young) audience, hence why I liked it before.
**School Days, in my opinion, wasn’t all too bad. The art was better, actually, than some of the stuff I’ve seen out there (other than the fact that the main character is drawn so that he looks like he’s twelve. Then, he goes off and basically rapes willing girls that are his friends- it’s kinda difficult to explain). It’s so unrealistic and the plotline just jumps around in completely unpredictable ways, I find it extremely hard to like. The ending was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in an anime. Sekai has a lot of fun with a butcher knife, I’ll tell you that.
Okane ga Nai just has an issue with art. It’s left me with the belief that Yaoi artists are too occupied with the yaoi aspect of the anime to draw human anatomy correctly. It’s probably my least favorite anime (OVA, whatever) just because of that.

I want to recommend an anime!
Title: Fate/Stay Night
Genre: Shounen, Action, Fantasy, Magic, Drama, Romance, Harem
Number of episodes: 24
Plot: In each war for the Holy Grail (a magical item that grants any wish to the holder), there are seven Masters, who are regular humans that fight for the Grail, and seven Servants, one of each class (Archer, Lancer, Rider, Saber, Beserker, Caster, Assassin). The anime follows the events that occur from the perspective of the main character, Shiro Emiya.
Why you think it’s worth recommending: Fate/Stay Night has wonderful music and art, plus a pretty nice plotline that’s not too cliché.
Anything else to keep in mind about it: If you dislike blood, stay away from it.

Hi, Ice!

Yes, Fate Stay/Night! For a long time that was my second favorite anime, and I was hoping someone would recommend it. All of the characters are really fun (although I would have loved to see more of Lancer).

A prequel series-Fate/Zero-is being released this fall in Japan. It takes place in the war ten years before the one that occurs in Fate Stay/Night, and I'm hoping it's as good!

Edited to add-I looked up Okane and while I love yaoi as much as the next person (probably more), the main character looks like he's about 12 at the most, while the love interest looks significantly older. Blech. I'm glad to see you don't recommend it, because it looks like one I would have trouble enjoying.

I've never seen a yaoi anime that is any good. Yaoi manga, sure. Yaoi anime? Not so much. Most of them are too focused on romance for my taste, or if they aren't, then the sexual elements are too weird.

Yes, it's a very good anime. There's been talk of Fate/Zero for a while now, I think (maybe as long as a 4th season of ZnT?) but I'm glad they're actually going to be releasing it this fall! I know I'll having something to be looking forward to, then. xD

It's such a shame that they couldn't have explored the personalities of each Servant more- perhaps Berserker-Hercules could've gotten some sort of back story to make his character have a little more depth. But overall, it was awesome.

Silly me, I forgot my other recommendations.

Oops, don't forget spoilers on stuff like
. I forgot to add that spoiler rule to the rules too. Oopsies.

Anyways, I've heard that rumor too.

Lots of stuff there.

Anyways, I'm also curious about Index, and intend to give Kuroshitsuji a try. My one question about Index-How ecchi is it? I have a pretty low tolerance for needless fanservice in anime. I prefer a thick plot to thick...other things.

Oh, right. I completely forgot to put it in spoilers, sorry. I've always thought it was only a rumor, though, and never bothered to actually check Wikipedia for it. That's pretty cool, though. I might try and see if they have Fate/Stay Night in game format. Most likely it won't be in English, though, or it'll be an eroge or something.

About Okane ga Nai- I searched it up too, and I was shocked at how much better the images looked than the drawings in the actual anime. I'm not trying to bash the art/artist, it's just that they were probably focusing on the storyline/romance aspect a bit too much...The older person's actually the main character. In the beginning, he sits there, thinking, "I don't want to hurt ____ because it was love at first sight four years ago, but I want his body so badly! Maybe I can make him sell his body to me..."

I think the best Yaoi out there is probably Junjou Romantica, as the drawings are actually bearable and it might even be cute. It moves a bit fast, but again, it's bearable. It has nothing on the best Yuri (Kampher) out there, though.

The thing about things that have J.C. Staff as a producer is that it's very mild. It seems like it's going to be bad, but it's not. The most recent example I can think of is probably only the scene where Touma finds both Index and another nun sleeping in the same bed as him. Or Touma finds Index in the shower (where she's cloaked by mist), etc. It seems like it's going to be bad, but then... it's not. No character is ever without some sort of clothing during the whole anime. I think kissing is the furthest they go- which is surprising, really, considering what they could do with their characters- but I guess it's mainly geared less towards a mature relationship. I don't know why it's tagged with Ecchi, really, since I just found the genre on the internet.
