Pretty stupid site to attack. I love MS, but I don't see what they would gain in attacking it?

It's bad enough us players have way too much time on our hands and have no lives... but to attack a simple click pet site? Jeeze.

Between Tristan's code-savviness and the CloudFlare subscription (at least, I THINK he pays for it), I think we're safe. MS is being rather slow for me (even though the server load is apparently 0.01 0.25 ish), and javascript things don't seem to work, such as embed and clicking on a font color button. That's all I've noticed so far, though.

Also, to everyone asking "Why would someone do this to MS?" :: Welcome to real life. It's not nice, and it's not fair. I'm betting that this was a "just because I can" sort of thing, or maybe this person or group of people has/have something against multiple pet sites, as I've learned that some other adoptable sites are apparently having issues as well.

Hmmm...what were the dates of the other DDoS attacks? I am wondering if all or almost all of those attacks correspond to any important dates for MS. After all, our Anniversary is tomorrow. As I recall, we did have an attack last spring about this time. If I am not mistaken, some of the other "down time" periods were also at high-traffic periods such as before (American) holidays.

As to the identity of Mystic-12? I would not rely on Wikipedia alone. Anyway, "Mystic-12" has to do with UFOs, NOT with disruption of Internet service, at least at the linked article. But the disambiguation page link DOES come up with a more suitable explanation:

There doesn't need to be a reason for everything. It could just be "because I want to."

It may not be because they were trying to be malicious so much as trying to make a point.
In the past, some hackers and their like have taken down sites to show the people owning/running them where they had flaws and loopholes that people who Did have malicious intent could use to their advantage.
It might just be that the person or persons responsible for this is also responsible for the other pet site attacks and has been doing it to try getting people to realise that just because a pet site Seems safe and innocent, you Still need to be on your guard.
Some big time companies actually hire hackers to break down their sites and systems to help them find where the weaknesses are. Perhaps, and I'm just trying to play devil's advocate here, this person or persons actually Likes pet sites and wanted them to tighten up their systems and coding to protect themselves from the Really bad guys out there.
Again, just playing the devil's advocate there. I honestly have no idea what moves this breed of person to do what they do other than possibly since they're computer based, instead of climbing a mountain because it's there, they're poking sites pretty much for the same reason... Because they want to see if they can and they want to see what their limits are. [shrugs]

Lots of theories, lots of thoughts but until or rather If we get more concrete information, all is supposition without substance and pointless speculation.

Anyway, it's back and whatever the "real" reason was for the attack, it Did serve as a mini-wake up call to tighten up the ship and make her a lil more airtight.
Never a bad thing to stream line stuff and make things harder to pick apart.
