PLEASE HELP!!!

Post by hikariangelwings »

READ PLEASE!

Okay, my friend is having some self-esteem issues with her artwork. She used to do mainly digital art of animals/creatures of her own design, but has recently been trying out sketching. She has been having some trouble and thinks she can't be a good artist (she thinks her digital art sucks too because she says it is just an animal standing there with a one color background). I have told her that considering she is just starting off (and has visual problems) she is pretty amazing and has a good basis to become a great artist if she keeps practicing/working on it. I have been helping her ink and color her sketches but since I am at college again she has gotten to the point where she was actually talking of burning some of them (the ones she hasn't completed) because she doesn't like flipping through her sketchbook of incomplete work. I want her to know that she is a good artist and that I am not just saying it because I'm her friend. I am putting her artwork up here to see what people think and to show her that she is in fact incredibly talented and has a lot of potential if she keeps trying.

Please comment! I want to show her what people think.
I will try to post as many of her pics as I can
(she has uploaded them on fb and sent me pics on her cell over the years so I am going to try to get them on here)
For privacy issues I will try to black out names and text

DIGITAL DRAWINGS!!!
She did these using a tablet. For some of the drawings she had to do all one continuous line for the coloring because her tablet would make the colors darker where separate lines overlapped. Sometimes if she broke the line she would have to start all over, so she sat there for long periods of time with her screen (which was magnified wherever her mouse was so she could see it) slowly coloring them in.

First Drawing she did using the Tablet:

SKETCHBOOK DRAWINGS!!!
*Note: She has only started working on a sketch book a month or so ago and I don't have many pics of her sketches. She has been getting depressed since she is having trouble drawing people and learning how to. I tell her that people are hard to draw but she is still depressed about it because all she wants to draw is people...

And after doing all this she still thinks she could never be a great artist....
PLEASE COMMENT AND SHOW HER OTHERWISE!

I am dedicating my account to give-a-ways. I will be doing egg-sitting, stock give-a-ways, breeding, and streamcatching. All donations are welcome, and 100% will go to the give-a-ways! Some times the creatures donated will be sold in auction. All proceeds will go towards buying creatures for the give-a-ways.

Holy heck tell her I would pay my entire keep for all those drawings! She is an amazing artist and I would love to know her personally, because if two people mix art something could happen! She should open a shop because I really like this.

My favorite is the first one of the wolf. The proportions are great and the short strokes give the feel of fur. The look back over its shoulder is dynamic enough to make me wonder what it's looking back at. The others lack that dimension, though the wings on the woman match it. They feel very feathery. There are a few anatomy issues here and there in the others, but nothing major. Very small tweeks would take these from good to great. I would think that with little effort the artist could improve tremendously.

I once PMed a friend on Furafinity with help. I had been following this person for four or five years. They now live off the money from their commissions. One of the big pieces of advice I can repeat is to never doubt yourself. Once that doubt settles in, you tend to not draw or learn as much. Be confident!

Other bits of advise from various people:

You cannot become great over night. It takes practice and learning from your mistakes. If you don't like something you created, keep it (this is important!) and strive to make it better the next time. Sometimes I feel like I'm not improving but if I have something to compare my current work to, it really does make me feel better in that I can see progress.

Draw for yourself, not for others. What this means is draw because you love it! Don't draw to impress. The majority of the time my favorite drawings I make are the ones most ignored. Even though this irritates me to no end, I'm happy that I created it for myself and I love it so that's all that matters :3

Practice, practice, practice! this seems to be redundant, but drawing every day will help you improve. Draw some still lifes, have a friend pose, go to the zoo. Creating some solid foundations will help you in the long run.

Half finished sketches or drawings are not a bad thing. In fact one of the greatest artists known, Da vinci, had a habit of not finishing things. His most well known creation, the Mona Lisa, is considered unfinished. So there's no shame in not finishing something. As long as you are learning and having fun, it should not matter.

All that being said, I find that the human proportions in the images are rather accurate. It's also interesting to see rather accurate representations of completely different animals. Most of the time it's difficult to switch between certain animals because the anatomy is so different. I think your friend has a lot of potential but that can only be uncovered from practice and kicking that doubt in the pants.

Also,
She did these using a tablet.
This is because the tool's transparency (or the layer) has been altered or it's a certain tool. The marker tool in Paint Tool Sai for instance is never at 100% opacity. The same is true for certain photoshop brushes.

I might as well add my favorite to the list:
It's the black wold with the red eyes. I like the pose in particular. I find it interesting that you can see an indicator of ears and other details, but it's dark enough to look like a shadow.

Her art is amazing. I mean I can definitely she where she has improved. I also still see little things that need tweaking as well, but that is many cause the ones I think need tweaking scare me a little. (The angry looking horse and the feet on the skeleton horses...But that could just be me.) Anyway, I absolutely love the drawings of the multi colored lion and the otter creature. They are gorgeous (even though the otter isn't colored that I saw  ) Even her humans are not bad. At least the proportions don't see that off to me so they are fairly realistic looking in that aspect.

I really like your friend's work and if I had gold to spare and she had a shop on her, I would definitely buy some of her artwork.

Also, art isn't about being perfect. Art is different for different people and what one person may think is a perfect work another could find a million flaws in it. The important thing to remember is that if the artist is at least happy with the work and it produces the effect that he/she wants, then the haters can go screw themselves.
Wishlist: Any water creatures (especially turtles)
