Hey. So, my name is Jason, and for my science project, I'm supposed to write a fictional story (yup, so very science-y) about my research topic. Last semester, I researched REFRACTION, which is an ever so interesting topic. I mostly focused on details like how the speed of light changes as it passes through different lenses, such as the atmosphere, a window, a diamond, etc. So my rough draft is due January 31, 2011. I've been thinking pretty hard and need some opinions on random stuff, so please help me out. I will post the actual write-up of the rough draft I turn in about two days before, to get last minute critique. I'd really love any random ideas from y'all, since I know the community of MagiStream is ever so creative. Of course, DON'T write a whole story for me, or else that would probably be plagiarism if I used it.

Basically, I'm thinking FANTASY. Perhaps a fantasy world of LIGHT (involving the bending of it aka refraction)? Then I'd have to name the world. So, uh... Lumni--something? I dunno. These are just random jotted-down notes, so it doesn't really make sense. I'll post blobs of schtuff here, but final big-blob will come later.

If it gives you ideas, there was a very well done short story written some time ago (published, though I don't know the author's name) where light from the inside of a house took years to travel through a specialized type of glass, thus immortalizing the life inside the house for the duration the light took to travel. It was a very touching sci fi piece.

As for fantasy, you could always write from the perspective of a photon, perhaps anthropomorphizing them such that they live in one world (a vacuum, air, whatever) and are afraid to travel to the "next world" where they will move slower.

Luminos is my suggestion for the name of the world. And how about this, there are special stone that can produce a light that is manipulated and converted into magic/mana or is used as a source of energy. But it is hard to find these stops since they do not always look the same and can be mistaken for common stones. And for the energy one they have to be placed in a special machine that forces this "energy" out of the stone and through the use of specially designed mirrors a type of generator is created. This would allow you to use some of the interesting facts that you like in the story as well. That's about all I can think about right now, I hope that helps. =^_^=

Or, if you run into a dead end fantasy-wise, there's always Magic School Bus format. It works great for a science-y story
