Prologue
“Aria…Aria? Come here my dear granddaughter.†said an elderly woman lying on a bed beneath layers of quilts. “I have a gift for you for your fifth birthday.â€Â
A small girl with beautiful long, straight black hair and sparkling green eyes poked her head around the corner of the door. “Nana?†whispered the girl while looking at her grandmother.
“Come, and I’ll give you your present. It’s hanging in my wardrobe over there next to the window.†the little girl, Aria, walks over to the wardrobe, opens it and finds a dark purple dress hanging there with black embroidery of beautiful flowers that Aria and never seen. The cuffs, collar and hem all had black lace lining them and matching gloves to keep away the chill here in the deep of the Alasre Mountains.
“Nana! It so pretty! My dress?†asked the girl while turning to look at her grandmother.
“Yes Aria, that dress belongs to you.â€Â
“Aria happy! Aria Loves Nana!â€Â

The weather has warmed, but Aria’s heart has become cold and closed off to others. Just a few months before was Aria’s fifth birthday, and now it is after her grandmother’s funeral. Aria is standing by her grandmother’s grave after the funeral, wearing the dress her Nana gave her. The rain is pouring down, yet Aria does not have an umbrella to hide beneath. Her parents stood nearby, watching their daughter grieve for her grandmother, heartless to her feelings.
“Come one Aria! We want to go home, this rain is awful.â€Â
Aria turns to her parents and reluctantly follows them home. All the while keeping her eyes to the ground, and thinking about her grandmother the whole time.
When they finally entered their house, Aria’s mother turns and smacks her daughter so hard she is thrown to the floor.
“That’s what you get for keeping me in the rain for so long. Look! I’m nearly soaked.†Aria’s mother yells, even though it was Aria without the umbrella.
“You useless piece of trash! What if your mother caught ill hmm? Where would you be then?†her father asks as he grabs her hair and drags her into the kitchen.
“As punishment you are to clean the whole kitchen, and not a peep do I want to hear come from your mouth.†her father tells her as him and her mother go up stairs to do who knows what up in their room.
Aria reluctantly obeys, for she is too young to know what else to do. As she stands on a small stool to start cleaning the dishes a tear runs down her cheek. Her grandmother was her only escape for this nightmare. And now she is gone, leaving Aria all alone.
