Bored? Write or Answer a Prompt!

Post by Namyre »

No need to rely on a previous or next post—just post either a writing prompt of your own creation, or answer someone else's. If you've inspired yourself, answer your own prompt for fun. Only one rule: keep it PG-13!

Example:
Namyre wrote:Prompt: Rule Your Own Island

Imagine you are granted ownership of your own personal, habitable island. You get to choose/invent your own government, make your own laws and currency, local religion, everything a population would require to exist. Explain how you would rule this island and all its inhabitants. If you're artsy, draw some pictures; if not, give some detail to how your island would look. Everything is under your control.
Go forth and be inspired!

I think I'll do a prompt and an answer to your prompt :)

Answer:
My island is small and crescent shaped. It has few inhabitants, but we are all of like mind and very proud of our island nation. We are a Republic, like the old Roman city-states during the Renaissance. All citizens have the option to participate in their local or national government, and there are two branches to the government: legislative (lots of houses, not just two like the US) and judiciary. Our society is heavily based on commerce, and we export tropical fruits and seafood. Tourism is also a big part of our economy, and many people come to see the myriad of birds that inhabit our island. The currency we use is the US Dollar, since it is still one of the most widely accepted currencies in the world, making it ideal for a trade-based nation. The inhabitants are all very self-reliant, and the government interferes very little with their lives. Religious preference is left to the citizens to decide, although the majority follow some branch of Christianity. The laws governing this island are simple:
1. Don't be a jerk
2. Keep the talent happy
3. Always come clean
4. It's not racist or offensive if it's true
5.Just because you can doesn't mean you should

Alright, now a prompt for someone else:

You suddenly find yourself in the world of your favorite book, TV show, movie, or video game. Which one is it? How are you going to survive this new world you find yourself suddenly thrust into? Will the people already living there accept you, an outsider, into their community? Or are you doomed to be an outcast forever?

Imagine that the moon is a mask. Every night, the soul of one of the creatures that died that day is chosen to wear the mask. The requirements change every night, depending on the phase of the moon. Write about one such night and spirits that vie for the chance to wear the mask.

If You Need More Inspiration, you can find optional details in the spoilers below;;
(You don't have to use them, or use all of them! Use as much as you feel like using)

Characters
Spoiler
Jackdaw is a small, bouncey feral kitten with wide eyes. She is childish and fierce, and was eaten by a fox. She wants to run across the sky and is certain that doing so will let her see her parents and siblings.

Witty but pessimistic, a young, human boy who'd like to look down and see the lives of all the living people one last time, and he died from a deadly illness that confined him to bed for many weeks.

Wisteria, a young maiden who was killed before her friend's- her true love's- eyes, wants her true love to look up and see her face in the moon. She is young, yet wise and loving, and happy with the knowledge that her partner will soon find happiness again.

This is the spirit of a warrior who was brutally killed by her deadly enemy. She wishes to look down on him, and defy him by lighting up the night.

A king, who desires to wear the mask of the new moon in order to see as nobody what he was unable to see while being somebody. He wants to see someone's grief, hear someone curse him and feel the smoke from a roughly made bonfire.

Eloquent is a dragon that wants to fly one more time and regrets letting go of life.

Yearling is a pup born around the castle who never got to run with the pack. He likes the half-moon mask because no one else does, and wants to see a hunt and talk to the stars.

Moon Phrases
Spoiler
"The full moon is for a hero, the new moon for stranger, the waxing crescent for a growing danger. Half moon for balance, near full for a failure. Waning crescent for one who's an elder."

or,
"The Half Moon like a shield shines on a protector.
Just before full moon is one dead too young,
just after full moon is one who stayed for too long.
Full Moon is the One who fulfilled every word,
Crescent for those, whose joys minstrels heard.
The New Moon is silent, a beginning and end."

or,
"The Full Moon's death is the one of glory,
The Gibbous Moon for an honest fool,
The Crescent Moon's death fit for a story,
The Half Moon mask for a trickster duel,
The New Moon should be well worn,
By one who is to changing times sworn."

As a challenge, choose the moon phase randomly.

Judges
Spoiler
Three divine beings chose the wearer of the moon;

Lady Fortune, called Luck, the goddess of luck and risks, She Who is Both Friend and Foe. Her eyes are made of light, and she plays with coins. Generally benevolent, she acts mostly on whim, and has a fondness for felines.

Soul, or Jonathan, who is the spirit of a boy/young man that died long ago and is called to break any stalemates between Luck and Labor.

Prometheus, called Labor or Lord of Toil, is a grouchy and ill-humored god who is hunched over and elderly. He is the one who believes in work and hard labor to get what one needs. Prometheus is clothed in grey and likes few thing, except for effort and sacrifice, which he greatly respects.

along with
Autumn, Lady of the Harvest or just Lady Harvest, is not one of the three who judge, but she commands their attention. She is the one who backs up Soul(Jonathan) and insists that Prometheus and Lady Fortune listen to him. Her belief is that 'One Reaps What One Sows'. She is the one who desires everyone to have what they deserve.
I know God will not give me anything I can not handle.
I just wish He didn't trust me so much.

Writing to the Island Prompt! I have actually thought too much about this. I have plans for my world domination.

It's a bit long in places, so I hid it to keep the post short :>

Island:
Spoiler
A large, semi-tropical island populated by a wide variety of edible plants, enough to sustain the population year-round with supplements of fish from the surrounding ocean. Small farms are cultivated on the edge of each of five cities, not including the central, capital palace. Treehouses are the preferred type of building, but larger structures like hospitals have been built. Electricity is provided by ocean current/ wind turbines and solar panels. There is little to no reliance on petroleum products, and anything needed is bought with profits from unique foods crafted by some of the stranger people living here.
Government:
Spoiler
The island is ruled by an Overlord (moi) under whom is a Council of the heads of lesser government bureaus (Commerce, Defense, Transportation, etc.) The Overlord is Supreme Tyrant, but must consult the Council before passing new laws. Thirty minutes of the Council's arguments for or aganst a measure are to be heard in silence by the Overlord, but after that, the Overlord may choose to ignore the Council completely. Members of the Council may call a meeting, and each Member may serve as an ambassador to other countries, but only to the branch of government affiliated with that Councilmember.
In the event of the Overlord's death, any new Overlord candidates must pass a common sense test, and be elected to one of four candidacy spots by the general population. After that follows a debate, and then a gladiatoral battle with weapons provided by public favor- i.e. the most popular candidate has the best weapons. The winner is the new Overlord.
Bureaus: Transportation, in charge of keeping monorails and rollercoasters properly maintained (see below) and making useful roads with little environmental impact; Public works, which includes Sanitation, government assistance in construction, waterway maintenance, and subsidies for hospitals and schools; Defense, the fleet of pirate ships which protect the island and occasionally hijack cruise ships for luxury items and young people willing to join the island to bring new blood to the population; Commerce, in charge of minting money (metallic coins), overseeing the national budget, and regulating markets (because nobody likes unregulated capitalism. Never ends well.); Human Services, in charge of distributing necessary items like food, water, medicine, and clothing, conducting genetic surveys (in conjunction with the Science Bureau) to make sure couples aren't inbreeding, monitoring the population in relation to available resources, and making sure quality of life on the island is good; Science and Weather, who monitor the global and local environment to make sure we don't destroy the island or get destroyed by storms, keeping track of local species to make sure they are all nonthreatened, monitoring climate change and its effect on the island's climate and how we need to rotate or food sources; Agriculture and Nutrition, mostly a subdivision of science, but keeps tabs on what is being used for food, the average national diet and how it affects health, and how farming and hunting/gathering impacts the island.
Public service:
Spoiler
Health care, education, and basic food + water are free. Cheap housing is available. Public transportation consists of rollercoasters, and monorails for those who don't like/ can't use rollercoasters. In every town the Library serves as meeting hall, community center, and supplementary schoolhouse. Libraries are also storm shelters due to the need to keep the books dry.
Justice:
Spoiler
There is only one prison, and it is used only for violent offenders. Punishment is swift and, some would say, cruel. A trial is held within two weeks of the arrest, witnesses must be provided if possible, and the Overlord presides over all cases. After the narrative of the crime is constructed as well as possible, while people with specialized skills like FBI profilers and people who can read micro-expressions are present, the Overlord will deterine punishment, ranging from a period of imprisonment and resocialization (resocialization is necessary unless the offender is in prison for life) to execution. The Overlord is the executioner, as nobody should pass a death sentence and then hand the actual killing to an underling. Method of death is left to the prisoner, with the exceptions of 'old age' and 'disease'.
Religion:
Spoiler
The official religion is a polytheistic practice centered around gods of the sea and sky, but people are free to practice any other religion they please. Fish entrails are burnt as an offering to the gods of the sea, feathers and plants are burnt to the gods of the sky. The god of the island is believed to inhabit the Overlord. (This is where I haven't given much thought.)
Identity:
Spoiler
The island's crest is something like a crescent and an arrow. Possibly also a pirate flag. National anthem is based on themes from various songs, including the theme from Star Trek: Voyager (*no shame*).
New Prompt: It only works every other Saturday.
(I was given this in a creative writing class and I love it.)

Took liberties with the prompt, so yay for minifills. This is based loosely off of Transformice's Survivor mode, where the shaman is to murder everyone else. Not that I like it.
Spoiler
Well, you know what they say about karma? How something you do will come back and haunt you?

Well, it doesn't seem to work that way anymore, or at least, that's what I observed.

Maybe the problem is that I'm not doing anything.

Yep, I'm like pretty much every other mouse in here, caught between a rock and a hard place. To be more precise, it's between one of those cannonballs and a stone wall in an unfortunate place.

Jump, duck. The cannonball sails over my head.

Still shivering, I turn around, and promptly get rammed in the snout with several tons of moving metal? Stone? Whatever this cannonball is made of, it sure is heavy. And undoubtedly painful.

It catches me off guard, sending me flying. I grab futilely at the plank, screaming as I fall down into the dark depths.

Then as soon as it started, it's over.

"Tromperoso is your shaman, follow her!"

Not bloody likely.

I wrote that last year actually :yey:

Edit:
"There, in the tower, she came face-to-face with evil."
Two characters from two different fandoms you are in bump into each other on the street, and wind up having a coffee, and possibly going beyond just the cafe. Document their interactions.
Three clashing personalities. Two kingdoms. One grouchy bartender. Zero doubt what will happen.
I'm leaving them a bit open-ended.

Prompt: Write about a character who has just seen something far against their morals along the side of the road as they came home. Whether it is a kidnapping, a beating, a theft, or something else, what does your character do about it? Do they get hurt? Do the stop the act successfully? Did they misread the situation?

I again took liberties with the prompt, kinda, and it's fanfiction. Par for my course XD
May have forgot to mention their intended destination. It's the manor, if you need to know :yey:
Spoiler
Dick was finding this day more and more amusing. Never mind that he was walking around Gotham with a clone of Superman. Never mind that nobody recognized him behind his shades. Never mind that woman who was flirting with him ("Um, I'm still underage?")

No, none of these could top this one. At the rendezvous point, there was no Wally jumping on his toes and waving to him with about as little speed as he could manage. No bone-crushing tackle, no string of words almost too fast for a regular human. Instead, he came face-to-face with Wally and a mugger. In broad daylight. In civvies. Well, this was about to become a lot more interesting.

The mugger brandished his knife as Superboy (well, Connor, seeing as he'd learnt how to ditch his shirt for something less obvious in the years he'd spent with the Kents.) stepped forward, teeth bared. Dick put a hand across his friend's chest, halting him before he could do irreversible damage to the man.

The mugger turned his back on them, both eyes now on his target. Idiot.

"Well, well, look what we have here." He snarled, digging through Wally's pockets. The other teen simply looked amused, and didn't make a move. Okay, so he was rolling his eyes and chewing something. Probably another of his snacks. Wally always did have a high metabolism.

Dick looked around desperately, hoping, hoping that Robin would have enough time to make a move. A step to the right, however, had the mugger glaring daggers at him. "You move, he gets this!" And as he moved his hand to the shirt of the victim-

Wally was gone. So were those two.

"Metas." The mugger groaned. Life was getting more and more difficult these days.
Edit to add: Slight AU where B isn't so secretive.
