NaNoWriMo Prep

Post by GlassOctopus »

Hi everyone! I assume everyone in this forum section is a writer or like myself loves to write when life isn't too hectic. Anyways, I wanted to talk about a writing event that happens every year in the month of November called National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo.

It is a great challenge, write a 50,000 word story in the month of November, but also a lot of fun and great feeling once you finish.

In honor of the wonderful month so close I wanted to offer a "Prep Course" of sorts with little writing challenges once a week and that everyone would post their weekly results here! *Note: you do NOT have to do NaNoWriMo to participant in this forum

Anyways onto the first week!
October 7th-October 12th : Create about a 1,000 word scene with an original character somehow involving llamas...

Hope everyone has fun and I will post mine soon!!

The blue starship just left me here stranded on the ground. I get up slowly looking around and rubbing the massive bump on my head. “Darn spaceship. You would think it could be a little nicer with the landing,” I bite under my breath. Scanning the area I see a large valley of white. Off in the distance I see mountains of ice clouded with a grey ominous mist. Looking behind me I see the edge of the icy tundra that leads into a golden desert. Questioning the surrounding area’s juxtaposition, I shrug and head to the desert. Least it is warm I think to myself.
As soon as I pass the threshold into the desert I am blasted with heat. At first I think it is the sun, but then I see tiny flames coming from the ground and look up to see a floating hover board. I have to squint to see the newcomer but instead of a typical droid I see the board is empty. Instead, it stops about eye level with a simple hologram screen. “Welcome Koby,” blue words flash onto the screen. “Yeah love to meet you too,” I snide at the screen falling into my usual smirk making the tip of my lip ring reflect off the screen. As if ignoring my comment the screen continues to a prerecorded video. I thought I would finally get to see the face of the man who put me into this hell, but of course the screen is the typical glowing blue eye. “Koby, welcome to Sector 502. I chose you because you seem to have much untapped potential,” the deep authoritative voice says. Yeah a high school drop out drug addict has so much potential I think to myself. “No need to beat yourself up Koby, instead your worth will be shown through a series of tests. There are no rules, befriend anyone you like or go alone, use whatever you can find or just use your abilities, the choice is yours and the only task: escape.”
“Roger that,” I say mustering up as much sarcastic enthusiasm as I can even adding a little salute. The hover board sparks up and takes off into the east as I continue to walk through the desert area. Being here reminds me why I never visit the desert—by the first hour my mouth was parched and satisfied myself with a shower in my own sweat. I pull off my Aerosmith Tour shirt and cover my green tipped mohawk in hopes of some relief from the overbearing sun. Finally, after crawling on my hands and knees I see a shimmer of water surface. With such relief I take off in a dead sprint towards the luscious liquid. Diving head first into the water I savor the taste of the sweet water. “Mmm H2O,” I sigh taking in a deep gulp. Suddenly, I see a ripple of movement at my side and turn to the sound of swishing water. Stay calm Koby, it is probably nothing I think slowly backing towards the surface. I hear another swishing of water behind me and even run into something scaly. Jumping back I stare as a massive being stands out of the water in front of me. I hate to admit this next part, but in that moment I screamed like a little girl...

Check out for the rest later this week!

I see a figure of a girl coming from the water. Her skin is an iridescent scaly blue with fins cascading from her elbow to her webbed hands. She stares at me with Caribbean blue eyes as large as a quarter that shadow her small pouting lips. Her hair, an evenly jumbled mess of seaweed falls to her shoulders and she stands about eye level. Once I catch my breath, I notice she just continues to stand and stare at me. “Well aren’t you going to say something?” I challenge. She gasps and escapes into the water unseen. “Hey where did you…?” I search for her until a massive wave of water falls onto me. I turn to see her laugh as the water evaporates from my steaming anger. “Not the hair,” I silently whisper shutting up her laughter. After I’m convinced she is fully terrified, I smirk. “Hu-uman. I have never been this close to one before,” she utters whipping the smirk off my face. “Where are you from?” I ask softly. “Well, I come from the planet Aquatis, but one day I woke up and two blue spaceships came and captured me dropping me here.” I can understand that I think. “Can you leave the water?” I ask which I receive a smirk. Shrugging my shoulders as if in defeat she squints at me folding her arms and cocking her hip to one side. Typical; no matter what species women are all the same.
She unfolds her arms and walks closer to me moving through the water gracefully. “Yes I do have a land form, but why would I use it when the underwater world is so vast?” I look around the little pond. It may be bigger than a typical swimming pool but nowhere near a “vast underwater world.” She rolls her eyes and points into the water, “Not this little pond but underneath.” I give her a questioning look but eventually shrug, “Since I can’t see it I guess I will take your word.” Now she gives me a questioning look. “You have eyes, no? How can you not see this water?” I make a little chuckle and respond; “No I don’t have gills so I can’t see this vast world you speak of.” She makes a knowing smile and says with a wink, “Oh I can fix that.”

(Even though that is only 960 words I hope everyone enjoys it and partakes in NaNoWriMo!)
