I saw a fox yesterday,

It looked like it was asleep. Merely resting.
There on the side of the road.
I returned for it the next day,
Prepared to give it a proper resting place,
prepared to lay it's body down someplace quiet,
to weave flowers into its fur.
To give a proper resting place to a forest god. A trickster spirit.
But it was not there curled up on the side of the road.
It was as if the fox had never been there.
As if it had simply woken up from its nap and walked away.
