Need Opinions -- the Fae

Post by GamingGal »

Greetings!

I'm wanting to start writing again (after I finish everything I've already started, of course :P) and I've been toying with the idea of the Fae. I like to use creatures that aren't used everyday (vampires, werewolves, etc), and they seem to be the perfect kind. Not too talked about so they're sort of an open slate to creating. I'm meaning Fairies to be specific, but might include others like Pixies and whatnot.

Oh! And I'm thinking the main character could be a changling. You know, a fairy child switched with a human child and left to grow up with human parents, knowing nothing of it's lineage, think it's a human. But then it's power could begin to grow. Not sure on what the power(s) would be, though....

What do you guys think?

Best Wishes,
GamingGal

Sounds like an interesting story. I really like the plot of the whole supernatural fairy/pixie thing, but I must ask you, will you have any other supernatural beings in the story?

Other supernaturals? Hmm....not so sure. This idea is just beginning to grow after all. What sort of supernatural were you thinking?

There are many roleplays that have supernatural creatures. Maybe you could look there if you are interested in other supernaturals. I don't know many, I think there is one called a Siren?

I would strongly recommend that you do some serious and perhaps somewhat extensive research about the Fae before you decide what and who characters are. I know that the concept of fairies are extremely fluid nowadays and you can pretty much do whatever you want as long as you stay within certain characteristics of a species. It might help you get a better understanding of what you are doing with your characters and might even provide inspiration.

The roleplays idea might be good for inspiration, but it is not a good source of knowledge because I bet that 95% of those people are basing their characters off of media and popular fantasy books, not the actual mythology and legends such creatures are from. If you looked up vampires from their legends of origin, you would find them to be extremely different than what they are today.

There is also more than one type of fairy, so research will help you narrow down not only what type of fairy your character is, but what powers they have, their "quirks", and region of origin to perhaps pull more fairies from for other characters. It might also reveal more about the world of Faerie, not just fairies themselves.

So basically: I would love to read a story with Fae in it, but you should probably do lots of research first, even if you are just going to make something up. It will help you come up with something realistic and believable.

Just google something like "types of fairies" and work from there. You might have to search around for a bit to find the information you'll need, but it'll be worth it when you get it. I would also search for lore on changelings to get exact specifics on what they are.
I have a lot of butterflies. :derp:

My story takes place in a small, agricultural town. They farm for a living instead of working in factories and whatnot. This town is located amongst all these foothills. In this foothills live various colonies of elemental fairies (earth, air, and water only. not fire since fire destroys the land and destroying the land in part destroys the fairies). In the outer reaches live the Adhene, fairies who are considered fallen angels and are called Children of Pride (they delight in causing mischief and benevolent acts to humans).

The beginning of the story happens when two fairies from the earth colony change one of their children out with a human child (to ensure they have new blood to prevent interbreeding. they can change human children into fairies, but if a fairy breeds with a plain human, it produces a normal human, just fyi, random sidenote for myself). This changling lives her life without knowing she is a fairy until she hits 18 and begins to notice things. Out of the side of her eye she might see herself in the mirror and notice her skin shimmering, or a glimpse of her wings. Not sure where to go from here.....I think she will discover she is a fairy....somehow.

The main conflict happens with an iron factory moves into the town. It's built over fairy land and they begin to mine iron ore out of the surrounding foothills. Fairies can stand exposure to small amounts of iron, like every day objects, but this large quantity at all times begins to kill them slowly and drive them out, which is killing the town as well since the earth fairies have been helping keep crop production up (not sure what the other elemental fairies help with...). The man who leads the factory is actually a lich who is creating armor to attach lost souls to (which he catches with hellhounds) in an attempt to create a dead army.

Anyway!

The fairies cannot harm humans, at least not directly, so they team up with their natural opposites (not sure if I would call them enemies.....), the Adhene, and use them to attack the humans directly while they attack indirectly. They also use the Cu Sith (who belong to the Adhene) and the Cat Sith (belonging to the elemental Fairies). I'm thinking of giving each elemental Fairy group their own mythical creature, but I'm not sure...

Sounds really nice but what's the role of the fairy girl in all of this?
Maybe you should make her befriend some other mythical creatures and go against the enemies?
Or make her go on a secret mission - to look for help from other fairies that live somewhere else?
And on the way she befriends other creatures....
