I'm sorry, but only short stories will be accepted(with a word count of 2,000-10,000 words). That is a very pretty poem though, I like it. Perhaps we should have poem-writing contests in the future? :)

I'm sorry, it was probably mentioned somewhere and I havn't seen it...

I might find the time to write something 2,000 words and more. The poetry writing contest could be a really good idea!

Hi! I love writing, but I've never entered a contest or really written anything magistream related, so I thought I'd give this a shot. Its not completely finished yet, as its only around 1,800 words, but I'm working on it. Hope you like it!
Spoiler
I walked up the path, my Talvar flying gracefully above my head. A gentle breeze fluttered by, blowing my brown hair back in the breeze. The breeze was warm, blowing scents of the jungle to my nose.

“Volo, calm down,” I called up to my Talvar. He was flapping around in the breeze, cawing and exploring his new surroundings. Volo, the name of my Talvar, was Latin for speed. He was one of my first creatures, and I loved him dearly.

Volo let out a soft caw, sounding like he protested. But, despite his objections, he landed on my shoulder. I hoped his small, sharp claws didn’t tear my clothing. I was dressed in a purple tank top and shorts. I was a wind magi, but I didn’t wear a magi’s cloak.

I was headed to The Jungle of Raza, and I feared I’d roast alive inside a cloak. But, in case I needed it, it was tucked safely away in my backpack. My pack wasn’t too heavy, but it contained all the supplies I might need. I had it slung over one shoulder, letting it dangle slightly.

“Do you think we’re close to the jungle?” I asked, reaching my hand up to run them across Volo’s soft feathers. He let out a squawk that sounded like ‘I don’t know.’ I smiled, rolling my eyes at the bird. He was one of my best friends, which is why I’d brought him along.

A lot of magi would say a Talvar wasn’t the best choice to bring to The Jungle of Raza, but, I didn’t have many other choices. I doubted a Puvia would be much better.

Volo let out a caw and lifted up from my shoulders, flapping his wings excitedly. He circled around my head, one of his feathers falling and dropping to the ground in front of me. I smiled.

“Have you spotted the jungle?” I called up to him. He looked down at me and nodded his small head, circling with a vibe of excitement. He was such a hyper bird, but, maybe that’s why I loved him so much.

I walked a bit further, the jungle coming into view. The trees were large with lush green leaves. A few tropical plants bloomed around, and vines snaked across the tree trunks. It was beautiful.

The sight of it only reminded me why I was here, to explore. The Jungle of Raza was a highly unexplored place. Full of life, undiscovered creatures, plants with the power of healing. It was any magi’s dream place. Completely untamed and full of adventure.

I was interrupted from my thoughts as Volo let out a caw and landed on my shoulder. I smiled at him. He cocked his head to the side, and I rolled my eyes.

“Ready to go in? You better stay close.” I told the bird. He looked a bit disappointed, but cawed his agreement before hopping onto my head. He poked at me hair with his beak. I laughed. Volo was such a silly bird sometimes.

“Let’s go then,” I looked at the jungle, my face showing determination. I was ready for whatever was ahead of me. Volo sounded excited, flapping his wings from atop my head.

“You better not poop,” I warned, making my way into the trees. Volo’s chirps sounded a lot like laughter as I entered the forest. The Talvar’s sounds were quickly drowned out by the sounds of the jungle around me.

There wasn’t really a path to wander through, so I made my way through the areas of the forest that had less brush and undergrowth. The jungle was truly an amazing place. I couldn’t get enough of the beautiful sights that spread out around me.

Creatures of all called to each other, some leaping about from tree to tree. I wondered if I’d find any eggs or creatures to take back with my. Lush green plants sprouted out around me, growing up tree trunks and across the ground. Flowers of beautiful colors spread around the area.

Volo fluttered off the top of my head and fluttered beside me, flapping and landing on a tree branch. He pecked at the trunk of the tree, hopping along the branch.

“Be careful, you don’t know what’s out there. You wouldn’t want to be eaten!” I warned him, pointing a finger at him scolding. Volo chirped what seemed like a ‘whatever’ and looked as if he’d roll his eyes. I glared playfully at the bird.

I continued walk along, enjoying the sights. I picked a few herbs to take back to the keep; they could be used for healing the ill. I carefully tucked the plants in my pack so I didn’t crush them. All the while, Volo flew around, simply keeping me company and enjoying the jungle himself. The bird seemed to have taken a liking to tropical fruits.

“If you don’t stop eating so much, you’re going to get fat,” I rolled my eyes jokingly as the Talvar crunched a strange-looking nut in his beak. Squawking, he dropped the nut, my words seeming to register in his head. It was a while before he ate anything else.

After a while, it began to grow darker in the trees. I knew it was dangerous to travel through The Jungle of Raza at night, so I decided I needed to start looking for a place to make camp. I knew I would get lost, but that still didn’t mean I’d risk sleeping in the undergrowth.

“Tired?” I asked as Volo landed on my shoulder. He snuggled closer to my neck and let out a soft chirp. I smiled at him.

We walked a while further until I came to a rather rocky clearing. “This place seems like a good place to stop for the night, don’t you think?” I asked. Volo chirped quietly, half asleep on my shoulder. I rolled my eyes.

I pointed the palm of my hands towards the ground and jumped, letting out a burst of air to help me jump higher. Volo blinked his eyes open, a bit surprised, as we landed on the branch of a tree. He cawed at me.

“It’s not safe to sleep on the ground,” I informed the bird. Volo didn’t say anything and simply cuddled back up in the crook of my neck. I pulled my pack of my other shoulder, swinging it around so it sat on my lap.

I unzipped the main pouch and pulled out my cloak, figuring I could use it as a blanket. I leaned my back against the tree, draping the soft fabric of the cloak over my legs. The bark was a bit scratchy against the part of my skin that wasn’t covered by clothes, but I’d be alright.

“Goodnight,” I mumbled to Volo, but the Talvar was already sleeping. I leant back more, slumping against the tree trunk and stretching my legs out on its large branches. My green eyes fluttered closed, and soon enough, sleep had drifted over me.

* * * * *

I woke up, startled, to the sound of growling. I gasped, jolting up from my slouching position. Volo let out a protestant chirp as my gasp roused him from his sleep. I glanced around, my eyes scanning the dark for any sign of the growling’s source.

It was early morning now, so I could faintly see everything. Volo squawked and jumped up from his spot on my shoulder, his claws digging in ever so slightly into my shoulder. Then I saw them

A pair of yellow eyes was looking right at me. The sight of them sent a shiver of fear down my spine, and Volo cuddled into my neck. The big chicken he is. I thought for a moment, and thought about what the eyes could belong too.

Another growl came from their direction, and then it hit me. This was a Telvian Panther. One of the largest, most threatening creatures in the jungle. I swallowed hard. I reached my fingers up and stroked Volo comfortingly.

The panther let out a growl, and I could tell it was baring its teeth at me although the light was dime. Fear was shocking through my bloodstream, and I was surprised I wasn’t shaking.

The Telvian Panther hissed and leapt at the trees, and I pressed my back ever closer to the tree trunk, tucking my knees close to my chest. This was it… I was going to die. The panther was going to eat me. Volo must have felt the same, because he let out a quit chirp.

I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the panther’s attack. But, all I heard was a hissing sound. It sounded somewhat like a snake, but I couldn’t be sure. I waited a moment before blinking my eyes open. The panther was gone. Volo let out a confused caw.

“Are you alriight?” came a snake-like hiss. I looked down, surprised. One of the naga people stood at the base of the tree. Her tail was coiled around, long and blue. She had a blue flower tucked behind her ear, her stringy white-colored hair held back behind it. She was beautiful, in her own way.

“I think so,” I said quietly, beginning to make my way down the tree. I’d heard stories about the naga people, but I’d personally never seen one.

“You think?” the naga questioned. I knew it wasn’t confused, simply joking at my human-like term. I smiled, knowing the naga wasn’t going to harm me. Volo fluttered from my shoulder and circled over her head, cawing his hello.

“I’m okay,” I corrected myself, firmly placing my feet on the ground. I ran a hand through my hair, untangling it. “Thank you for saving me.”

“Ittss no probblllem,” the naga replied. Her voice was snake-like and she seemed to stretch out her words.

“I’m Clair, a wind magi. My Talvar’s name is Volo,” I held my hand out for the naga to shake. Volo squawked and landed on my shoulder. The naga placed her surprisingly smooth hand in mine, smiling.

“Breeeena,” the naga introduced herself, a bit of her stringy hair falling into her face. Though her speech was a bit slurred, I could tell she’d said Breena.

"Please to meet you," I slid my hand from hers, letting it drop to my side. I reached into my pack, pulling out a few herbs I'd gathered. "Take these as thanks for saving me."

"Thannk you magiii," Breena took the herbs into her hand. Her hand brushed mine and I found myself again surprised at how smooth it felt in mine.

Alright, according to the poll results, the rule will stay at one story per competitor per competition(aka 1 entry for each month), winning by 9 votes! Judges are being contemplated at the moment, and I'd like to remind everyone that they have until the 27th to submit their FINAL entries :) Also, I'm open to suggestions for September's theme - should we do a poetry contest? A story about rabbits(lol)? Well, who knows - if you have an idea, PLEASE post it! :)

I don't think I'm going to enter this month, as I know NOTHING about magistream history XD Maybe for September we could have a non-magistream related contest? :t-ninja:

Yes, I'd like up mix up real-world themes and fantasy and magic and tht sort of thing. Rotate genres around. ;) As for MS history, the "world" locations with the lore and everything and also creature descriptions are good places to find info on the MS world :)

*pokes nose into thread* Oh hai contest. >.> I'll have to try to submit something before things get too crazy and I have no time. Also, before the contest ends. *coughcough*

As far as prompts go, there are some cool open-ended prompt generators at Seventh Sanctum. There are some specifically for writing, but some for physical character descriptions and stuff. It's a fun site. c:
