Modern Magi: Phoenix (NOW OPEN!)

Postby PKGriffin » June 27th, 2012, 4:03:01 pm

Reborn from the ashes, as it were. This is something of a continuation and a remake of an older thread. You do not have to be one of the old members to join anew, but I welcome back anyone and everyone who would like to continue in the story.

Modern Magi: Phoenix

This land was once a bountiful fantasy world where dragons flew among the clouds and unicorns frolicked through vast expanses of terrain. There were mountains to the west, shielding a great forest, tundra and wondrous cities to the north, jungle to the east, and desert, even volcanoes in the south. The very earth was sown with magic, and its farmers of an equal nature were known as the Magi. Magic users with powers over all aspects of nature, the ability to pull from the air flame, water, and soil, to talk with creatures, change the world, and even, in some cases, change their very bodies. These magic users bonded to the creatures of the land, in time becoming as valuable to their animal charges as they were to the non-magical people around them. For you see, it was the Mage's job to maintain balance in the world, to preserve and protect the magical portions of the world while keeping them restrained so as not to disturb the non-magical portions of the world.

There was once a time when you could walk outside to see spring flowers growing in the large meadows just outside of the castle-like Keep. Alongside the fields, a glimmering stream flowed gently. Multicolored magical eggs drifted down the stream, awaiting a young Mage who would come to raise a magnificent creature. There were times when darkness would nearly overtake the land, the only resistance a handful of Magi with their creature companions. But this is no more...

The Stream had vanished, dried up, and its magical powers have left with its water. The Etain has expanded far beyond its traditional region, though its border it still some distance from the Keep. Absent of the aura and liquid that supplied the vast fields with life, the area around the Keep is little more than a dust bowl. The tree line of Silva Forest has grown to encompass the area as well, creating an alternating dark forest and wasteland. Only the toughest, and often the most dangerous creatures survive in the desecrated forest; Enoxes, Dragons, Gryphons, Direwolves, and Hellhounds, among few others. The more peaceful creatures have left for easier grounds to live in.

As for the Magi...well, no one believes in magic anymore. There are cities with skyscrapers, underground train systems, roads, highways, vehicles, airplanes, computers -- magic is just a simple fantasy that children and old people believe in. This was the belief until recently. In secret, known only to a select few non-magical people, the Magi has remained. Hidden away in the wasteland forest of their former home, the Magi of the Keep have defied belief and lasted out the centuries.

One person born in every half-million develops magical skills, whether they can turn into a fantastic creature, force fire from their palms, or read the thoughts of others. Frightened, confused, and often persecuted by equally confused peers, these modern-day Magi find difficulty eking out a living in even the most familial environments. If they are lucky, and most of them are, a society may take them in to train, to learn, and to control their abilities.

The Modern Magi Academy and Agency now fills the same vital role of educating young magic users in the art of their trades as the Magi of ancient did. It is one of only five schools of study, all of which also actively search out other Magi to join their school. These Magi come from all over the world, different regions set out for the schools that rescue unfortunate men and women with emerging powers. They train to become leaders, beginning as Trainees and ending up, if they are lucky, as new Searchers. A Searcher's job if to find and rescue the New Arrival Magi.

But even in this world of hope and retention of bits of the past, there are dangers. Three years ago and before, a group of miscreant non-magical people took out their angers on the Magi. Led by a shady and cruel man known only as Mitch, this group of overly-zealous thugs sought to eradicate the Magi by whatever means necessary. The Angels, they call themselves, supposedly good and holy do-gooders set on a mission to destroy Demons -- the Magi. In reality, the Angels are well-funded and well-armed for battle, capable of procuring the most advanced technologies and weapons of the age. They are also highly secretive, and little is known about them by the Magi (who are now out of hiding) or the general populous. They are not well-liked, and their own discretion works against them so that the Angels are always stressed for troops. It is said that they steal away young children to raise as their minions, but these are mere rumors and most members are friends or family of the original gang of thugs. They have only one base, in an unknown location apparently close to the Keep (which has also been many times refurbished to comply with modern technology; ultraviolet lights, gas, heat, and plumbing). The Angels are highly dangerous in the eyes of many, and as a result, the Magi have been preparing for war. All five schools have their few-hundred or so best and strongest fighters camped out in the Keep, ready for battle.

You are one of two groups: either of the Angels or of the Magi.

Magi

Magi in this roleplay all come from Modern Magi Academy and Agency, as Searchers, Trainees, and as New Arrivals. I am also adding Healer characters for the first time. Of course, there are more New Arrivals and Trainees than Searchers, but in terms of playable characters, we want most of the groups to be fairly even. Magi can have two primary powers and two secondary powers, and their ability to use these powers develops as they age and train. New Arrivals have the weakest control of their powers, Searchers have the strongest.

NPCs

There are several NPCs around the Academy who can be played by any user. Some of these are teachers, but others are Searchers or Healers and similar specialists. If you encounter any of these characters, feel free to play as them and develop them, but only so long as it appeals to their personalities.

Angels

For as long as Magi have existed, there have been some non-magical people who knew about them. In most cases, these regular humans were friends of the Magi and lived alongside them with no concern. But then for a very long time, ordinary humans forgot about their magical companions, when the Magi mysteriously disappeared and the Stream dried up. Humans thought of magic as children’s stories, and slowly began to fear any evidence of true magic. A few years ago, the Magi released their presence to the world, and were welcomed with opened arms by many. However, a few stood out as fearful and hateful of magical humans and creatures. The most prominent of these groups is the Angel organization.

Map and Forms

Modern Magi Academy and Agency (Map for Angel HQ unavailable)

(Please excuse the poor map drawing)

Main Keep – Where all of the Magi live and where most of the classes are held.

Keep Wall – New security measures make it so that people may exit the Agency, but unless they have authorization or a pass-code, they will not make it past the guards or magical barriers.

Basements and Underground Passage – The basements are unusual, magical places where things may be stored. They are seldom used other than for storage, as the tunnels change on their own and will open or seal themselves at their own will. One has recently been found in the library, but it has not been opened since.

Training Area – Any Mage training for battle will go here for lessons, taught by Master Tornac. It has a weapons facility, training field, and a battle-preparation maze to keep training Magi light on their feet.

Retention Area – A domed building with magical enchantments to prevent escape, this building is used as a holding area for any disruptful Mage, or, if the case comes up, prisoners.

Creature Caretion – Located in the Keep’s small portion of the forest, this building is designed as a veterinary clinic for magical creatures.

Re: Modern Magi: Phoenix (NOW OPEN!)

It began with a blizzard.

The Keep's halls were kept warm with at least two dozen furnaces, a few fireplaces, and too many heaters to count, but even through the tough windows, everyone inside could feel the force of the wind. All three ponds had frozen over, and the warding magi were required to double their defenses around the Keep's walls and greenhouse daily, for fear of building damage due to the strong winds and fierce ice. They couldn't afford damage now, especially while the weather made some of the magi and their creatures vulnerable to attack. This blizzard was the fiercest in many decades, but only one of many this winter. It was was admittedly the worst, and many feared that this was what the Angels had been waiting for in order to strike at the Keep.

Icefyre personally found this weather a godsend, for he would be in top fighting shape should they need to fight outside. However, the Keep could not possibly be defended by one or two ice-based Searchers, and the chilly weather came with its own unique drawbacks. While many of the Keep's residents and visitors (nearly totaling three thousand after the arrival of four other magical academies -- not including the creatures!) enjoyed huddling near the fires or dragons and phoenixes for warmth, the constant blazing heat was pure irritation to any cold-loving creature. Icefyre had found himself standing on or next to a heater while talking to a fellow mage and subsequently losing focus on whatever they might be talking about. The warm indoor air left him with a sick feeling that was only relieved upon stepping outside for some fresh air. He could only hope that the Angels would be stubborn and thick-headed enough to try to break through the main walls.

He rubbed his head, exhaling a long, stale breath. He knew they wouldn't do that. The Angels were sharp and cunning, and perfectly willing to fight dirty. He often wished that the magi did not need to learn this from experience, but every few weeks the Angels sprang new traps and ploys upon them. Just last month, a scouting group had been ambushed and disappeared for a week, only to reappear with no knowledge of their own names. Who does that sort of thing? Ice wondered. Who would rob someone of their very thoughts? And to what purpose? Icefyre grimaced to himself, rubbing a line of notes out with his pen. Asking questions about the Angels' motives led to a perpetual merry-go-round of endless questions and dissatisfying answers.

He cut his notes for this week short; with the blizzard, few events of note had happened around the Keep. He was having difficulty concentrating, even in his chilled room devoid of heating elements. He scrawled a signature at the bottom of the paper and slid it into an envelope. When the notes were folded up and placed in the Searcher notice box, Icefyre began his quick rounds. He saw a few of the new magi Trainees and well as instructors. What surprised him today was the simple idea that all of the faces he passed were recognizable. On an ordinary day, Icefyre might pass four or five New Arrivals, all fresh to the Keep and in need of orientation, which Ice was ore than happy to provide. With the bad, weather, however, the Searchers had all been called up to remain at the Keep and postpone all calls for new magi. There were plenty of concerns and arguments about this, but until Mam let up the notice, the new magi around the world would have to wait.

Icefyre walked two rounds trough the Keep, ensuring that everything was in its place. A few months ago, they had suffered a dire security breach, and Ice was cold-set that such a thing would not happen again on his watch. Anlia, the Direwolf Searcher, was doing the same, and acting quite irritating about it. Ice had twice seen her pacing around and barking (not quite literally) at any Trainee who dawdled in one place for too long.

Icefyre was glad to step outside, the cool air and fierce wind rejuvenating him like a good rest. He soon felt quite better about his day. However, he hadn't stepped outside just to get some fresh air; he had one more task to do before he could head out to the Mess Hall for lunch. Even though the snow prevented him from seeing further than twenty feet ahead, Icefyre knew the path as well as any Hall in the main of the Keep. It was covered in ice and snow, but still barely visible as another Searcher had come this way a few hours before. A Jackalope ran across his path shortly before he reached the Retention Area.

"oh. . .what a mess" grumbling groggily the female voice carried through the hall along with every slap of her bare feet against the cold stone floor, a blanket slung around her shoulders. Grumbling to herself a pale hand reached up scratching at her head fuzzy red hair. Curling in rings about her head she gave a small puff a few strands in front of her face floating up and back down again she frowned sleepily. "Welp, time for breakfast" with a picked up stride she headed for the mess hall hoping to find cereal or well she'd love some sliced cooked ham but that probably wouldn't happen.

Padding down the stairs quietly a cup of coffee sloshing in hand she cursed her luck the line was long as usual to the mess hall but that was alright. She was always hungry it seemed, thus why she tried to stock up on snacks or something at least to curb her over everyday or so. Chewing at her lip she heard a few yelps and gasps of new magi as something seemed to startle them. Perking up curiously she gave a grin big black feathery wings flapping the sound almost deafening at times she grinned "well hello there Knocks" the wings rustling and settling back against his back tucking tightly the tyullian wide piercing icy blue eyes peered into hers a hand nervously pushing up dark rimmed glasses as he did. "well, well I know it's cold and your happy and all but really this early in the morning?" she seemed to be protesting, her owl always wanted to study, he loved reading and learning as most owls did. . .he would be out hunting or moving about outside right now but with how fierce the wind was well. . .it just wouldn't be good for flight.

Finally inside the mess room the messy women shifted a bit the line was growing shorter and she was smiling pretty happily. There seemed to be cooked ham today and her mouth watered. The tyullian at her shoulder hooted quietly he himself rather hungry he'd soon be fed the mess hall having a few people willing to give out a bit of tid bits he'd get some nice heated raw semi-heated meat as he did like some of it cold. Grabbing her plate the woman gave a sigh a semi-troubled look to her face she settled down at her seat and began to cut up her ham and stuff into her mouth. "we'll head up stairs soon kay?" looking at the tyullian she gave a nudge before fork in mouth tried to put her hair up into a pony tail and then tucked it beneath her hairband. "mm. . . man I so missed ham" grumbling she took another good bite.

(I'll try to be descriptive...It's hard so tell me how I've done it)
Garnet was on his bed, in his casual clothes, uncovered by anything else. He was wearing long white pants, with two blue stripes at the exterior edge. The front of the pants had an interesting but elegant mixture of blue with a little green veins that were making a beautiful design, like a plain full of flowers that were appearing from the snow. Upper, a black belt appeared like a stranger in the outfit. The belt was wrapped tight around his abdomen. From the right part of the belt, another belt appeared and wrapped him, starting from where the first one was and surrounding his left shoulder. The first belt had a small pouch at the left. The second belt, at the back, had a special place to keep Garnet's staff. He had a white shirt with blue and green runes at the wrists at blue stripes on the front. He was also wearing a white cape with green inside. His black staff appeared in it's outfit.
He was awake for some time. He wasn't really used to sleep in a bed as he lived most of his life as a thief... He had stayed a lot part of the night thinking at his choice to remain or not, sometimes being covered in a blank of full darkness just to awake again there.
He gazing at a wall and the shadows on it. The small red-orange light from the candle was projecting weird forms on the wall.... The scream of the wind outside could be heard through the thick walls...
He wasn't thinking at anything...He was sensing his breaths.
He got up and questioned himself where he was.
Oh, right...I'm at the keep....he thought looking down. at his legs.
His eyes were white towards a light blue. He ignored the wall and looked at the candle...He sensed his breaths again and again. The candle's light danced under Garnet's breaths until it was overwhelmed by them that it disappeared letting in it's place a ghostly thread of white smoke. The room was again covered in darkness.
He sighed and got up. He searched for his shoes in the darkness and soon found them. The wind outside forced the window open, the curtains rising up. Frigid air entered in the room, causing the temperature to fall fast. Garnet sighed and the air exited the room, closing the window in it's way. Garnet walked there and checked the window. He locked it so that event will not repeat itself. He exited the room walking slowly and gazing into nothingness. He was thinking about the offer.
A nice place where to sleep...Maybe it's not a bad idea to stay here...Or isn't? If I'm alone, I can hide better and this is surely the first target of the Angels...Maybe I should ran away...
He passed near some people. They were near the fireplaces or near their creatures.
Oh..yeah,maybe I should check Drag..thought Garnet.
A person from the group moved and started walking towards Garnet.
I don't want to chat...If I decide to go away, it'll be easier if I don't make any friends...thought Garnet.
Garnet had a lot of space between him and that mage but he didn't run. He walked nice and slow.
The mage, a person near Garnet's age, arrived near him only when Garnet was at the exit door.
Garnet looked at him and his eyes sparked red as he activated his powers. The mage wanted to say something when Garnet activated his power but he couldn't. He was blocked and he didn't even knew this. Garnet opened the door, frigid air entering the keep and closed it. He walked making the powerful wind split in front of him and recombine with the other past at his back. He sensed the other people's mind being blocked near him but he didn't cared. He didn't need it to counter, he could sense the time pass, second with second. Whenever he activated his mental power, he was more concentrated. He walked towards the Creature Caretion, the wind filled with snow hiding his traces.
He knew when his powers could be activated and when how much he kept them activated.
30...he thought as his eyes sparkled blue as his powers deactivated itself.
He was a away from other people, the snowy wind that was avoiding him making his blend more into it's surroundings. No one knew he passed.
The mage that wanted to chat with him was scared, he was thinking he saw a ghost and started walking again towards the fireplaces.
Dark branches filled with heavy snow appeared slowly in front of Garnet. He was getting close to the destination. He entered the small building and quickly was tackled down by a huge beautiful creature. Drag.
"How are you?"asked Garnet getting up and then petting his dragon.
Drag put his head close to Garnet's chest. He let a warm breath outside his huge body.
Garnet smiled, he knew drag and Ice very good so he knew somehow knew what they were saying through their reactions.
"Ice is okay...don't worry."said Garnet. Drag looked at Garnet with it's huge eyes.
"I don't know...I'm still trying to decide."

Aisling Kells was dressed in a black warm cloak and warm black combat boots. She walked up to the keep. Yep this was the place she would be staying, her direwolf followed coldly behind her into the keep. Aisling accidently bumped into Iycefire, "Oh gosh, I am truley sorry!" Yellex Aisling, her hood fell down to reveal heer pale face and white hair, more frightening, her hellhound shaped red eyes. She was rambling on about how sorry she was and that she was new and stuff.
