Taxonomy of Mythical Creatures

Post by DvZaR »

I'm really interested in two things. One, mythical, magical, speculative, and imaginary Creatures. Two, biology and taxonomy. How does that blend? The Taxonomy of Mythical Creatures. I've always been thinking, what if we were to create scientific names for mythical creatures, and classify them into real-world taxonomy? A lot of Mythical Creatures have some sort of classification title after them, may it be a species, genus, etc. For example, Draco, the flying lizard genus, comes from the Latin word for dragon. Since most mythical animals can be related to real animals and their traits, we can classify them based on their traits in common with other animals. For example, a stereotypical dragon:

1.Has wings
2. Reptilian/Crocodilians body shape
3. Breathes fire
4. Is bipedal when not flying
5. Has a tail

From this, we can see that the dragon (we're using the wyvern definition), as simple as it can be, (we get less accurate as we get simpler) is a dragon: A crocodile with wings that breathes fire. From there, we can classify it as a probable member of the order Crocodilia. We could also make up our own family and genus for it, because it is very different then other crocodiles. How about family: Draconidae. There are probably tons of different dragons, so let's leave the genus and species blank, assuming that different types of dragons cannot reproduce fertile offspring together.

That's an example classification for the Wyvern, can you help me make some more classifications? Thanks!
